The focus of process improvement at Spire is to strive for excellence in the work Spire accomplishes every day. The Continuous Improvement intern will have the opportunity to gain hand’s-on experience in leading process improvement events by assisting various members of the department with identifying, analyzing, prioritizing, facilitating and driving complex process improvement engagements from conceptualization to implementation and realization. In addition to gaining hand’s-on practical experience, this individual will be able to develop business acumen skills through exposure to strategic planning, Lean concepts and change management. This is a paid internship.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work with Continuous Improvement team members to evaluate and scope improvement opportunities

  • Assist in the facilitation of various Continuous Improvement engagements, including value stream mapping, 5 Whys, hypothesis development and testing, visualization of workflows and others

  • Work closely with other members of the Innovation and Technology team to drive Continuous Improvement solutions through to implementation

  • Build appropriate documentation necessary to identify project resources and cross-functional project dependencies

  • Complete regular reporting requirements including dashboards and other executive-level reports; assist in the maintenance and execution of appropriate communication and change management plans

Required Education (certifications, licenses)

  • Full-time rising junior or senior pursuing a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree student from an accredited University in an analytical field (ie. IT, Engineering, Science, Business), required

  • Prior coursework and knowledge of Lean Principles and Process Improvement is valued

  • 3.0 GPA or higher required

Required knowledge, skill and abilities

  • Ability to engage in active listening; connect business functions and processes beyond area of expertise, drawing connections to the bigger picture

  • Ability to use checkpoints and processes to measure results

  • Strong communication skills; ability to articulate technical material to individuals in non-technical roles and environments

  • Strong aptitude for critical thinking and a passion for problem solving

  • Be able to work 40 hours per week throughout the summer internship

Physical demands, environment and schedule

  • Work is normally performed in an open, shared office environment

  • Typically, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday

  • Additional time beyond normal work hours is sometimes required to meet target timeframes for completing special projects or studies
