General Summary

As a Mechanical Systems Engineer, you will have the overall responsibility for the reliability and life cycle management of mechanical systems and equipment to ensure assets are operating to meet the safety, reliability, and compliance goals of the company. This job requires high individual motivation in a team-oriented environment. Individual work assignments will be based on the employee's educational background and Consumers Energy business needs.

Duties and Knowledge

  • Providing support to plant operations, maintenance, and engineering to help resolve system and equipment problems.

  • Assessing systems in accordance with the System Health Assessment Process

  • Developing and maintaining system history for key systems.

  • Performing system monitoring and ensuring that actions are taken to ensure reliability. This includes:

  • Monitoring operational trends, predictive monitoring trends, preventive maintenance and inspection results, equipment and condition indicator data, life-cycle input, repeat maintenance, input from operations, input from regulatory and strategy organizations, etc., to identify performance issues and/or needs for action.

  • Ensuring that corrective actions are identified, justified, appropriately scheduled, and completed.

  • Developing strategies and justifications for equipment life-cycle management and to improve system and component performance consistent with the corporate business plan to ensure safety, compliance, and reliability.

  • This includes problem identification; development of solutions; development of cost estimates, justifications, and timing requirements; and providing input to the Financial Planning Processes.

  • Maintaining short-term and long-term system plans.

  • Maintaining compliance with Asset Compliance Programs such as Michigan Boiler Law, Cyber Security, Gas Code, fire protection, HRSG Safety Programs.

  • Optimizing predictive monitoring programs, evaluating data (routine performance testing, operational trends, vibration analysis, thermal (IR) analysis, oil analysis, etc.), and taking appropriate actions based on results.

  • Optimizing preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and utilizing data/trends to adjust PM strategies.

  • Leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for equipment problems.

  • Providing remote monitoring support (deep dive review and response).

  • Providing overhaul, refurbishment planning, and shop/field oversight for equipment as needed.

  • Providing recommendations for spare parts inventories for system equipment.

  • Providing Work Management Support

  • Assisting Plant and Production Engineers to prioritize Notifications and Work Orders.

  • Ensuring open work orders are appropriately scheduled to ensure system reliability.

  • Assisting in outage and work window planning.

  • Coordinating Capitalized Emergency Equipment needs.

  • Acting as Project Single Point of Contact (SPOC) and/or Sponsor for projects.

  • Coordinating routine outage equipment testing.

  • Leading annual insurance inspections (FM Global).

Requirements/Qualifications

  • 5+ years of applicable experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited engineering school

  • Mechanical Engineering preferred

  • Equivalent training or experience may be considered.

  • Demonstrated computer skills in Microsoft Office and computer analysis programs.

  • Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively plan, organize and set work priorities.

  • Demonstrated technical writing skills.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated leadership ability.

  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred:

Strong background in the following types of equipment preferred.

  • Large pumps

  • Fans

  • Blowers

  • Compressors

  • Heat exchangers

  • Valves

  • Fluid couplings

  • HRSG operation

Hours and Travel

Primary work location is Zeeland, MI, but supporting generating assets and meetings at other Consumers Energy sites. Shift work, and occasional weekend and holiday work and overtime are required. Work schedule generally traditional business-like hours, but is driven by needs of service, including electric power demands, market conditions, and business considerations. Roughly 30% in-state travel for plant equipment inspections and interfacing with O&M personnel and contractors is typical. Occasional out-of-state travel is required for inspecting components in supplier shops and attending training seminars.
