Department Summary

The Business Internship Program is geared towards current college students who are earning a business degree or other related field that aligns with the skill sets included in this job description.  We are also looking for those who have a passion for learning the inside workings of a large utility company within the energy industry.  The Business Internship Program at Consumers Energy has core principles in place to challenge the intern and practically apply theories learned in their educational journey. 

Job Description/Responsibilities

Current college students of all levels will work as part of a larger team to provide hands-on support and development for various supply chain aspects of our business.  This could include work in; project management, human resources, strategy, governance and compliance, supplier diversity, inventory and sourcing analytics, supplier performance, supplier control, issue resolution, warehousing and more all while helping create a better tomorrow for the communities we serve!

Enrolled and actively pursuing an associates or bachelor's degree in business from an accredited university as a full time or part time student.  A successful candidate should have a GPA of 2.7 or higher.

Some of the basic skills required for the role:

  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

  • Self-Starter

  • Flexible

The following skills and experience may set you apart from others:

  • Experience with data analytics

The location of the internship may vary depending upon assignment and travel within the State of Michigan may be required. However, during this time of uncertainty, we are committed to ensuring the safety and health of our communities and co-workers.  We are using new and innovative ways to interview and onboard new employees remotely at this time. This role could be remote until our leadership team has determined it’s safe to resume work in the office.

Essential Functions

In addition to working alongside full time employees carrying out supply chain functions for Consumers Energy, Business Program Interns will have the option to participate in a number of additional optional events within the program. This includes intern networking events, company tours, and the consistently top-ranked philanthropic event, the Intern Challenge.

Hours and Travel

This position requires the individual to typically work 40 hours per week with 85% of the time spent in the office or specific field locations. Travel is required to job sites and project meetings and could be significant dependent upon location.  Individuals need to be willing to work additional hours as necessary to meet deadlines or assist with storm restoration activities. The individual should be willing to participate in the on-call rotation in case of potential storms. Individuals may have to work outside of assigned headquarters to help with storm restoration which may require overnight stays and Individuals must have a valid driver’s license.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The noise level on the construction site is often loud.  Individual must have the ability to work up to 16 continuous hours during emergent work.
