What you will do

  • Mechanical skills: Wind technicians must understand and be able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair all mechanical, hydraulic, braking, and electrical systems of a turbine.

  • Physical stamina: Wind technicians must be able to climb on ladder systems to height of turbine nacelle, often with tools and equipment. Some tower ladders may be 280 feet high or taller. Therefore, wind technicians should be able to work for long periods without tiring easily.

  • Physical strength: Wind technicians must lift and climb with heavy equipment, parts and tools. Some weigh in excess of 45 pounds.

  • Perform switching in the substation maintaining clearances and writing switching orders

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a two year associates degree or technical school certificate OR

  • A combination of education and experience and 1 year of directly related experience can be considered in lieu of a degree/technical certificate

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to climb turbine towers (280 ft+) daily is a requirement of this position

Wind turbine technicians inspect, troubleshoot, install components and repair wind turbines and turbine internal and external components such as controllers, electrical components, yaw drives etc. They review manuals and schematic diagrams to determine the tasks, tools, equipment and parts needed. A Tech will typically be a strong troubleshooter and required to return turbines to service after faults in a timely manner.

Wind technicians have familiarity with all systems of the wind turbine including structural, mechanical, electrical, controls, communications, electronic components, gearboxes, hydraulic systems, vibration monitoring, SCADA, and environmental safety and health systems. The following skills are necessary:

  • Mechanical skills: Wind technicians must understand and be able to maintain, troubleshoot and repair all mechanical, hydraulic, braking, and electrical systems of a turbine.

  • Physical stamina: Wind technicians must be able to climb on ladder systems to height of turbine nacelle, often with tools and equipment. Some tower ladders may be 280 feet high or taller. Therefore, wind technicians should be able to work for long periods without tiring easily.

  • Troubleshooting skills” Wind technicians must diagnose and resolve faults on turbines as they relate to mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic problems

  • Documentation: Wind Turbine Technicians must have a proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software, SQL Server software, facility management and reporting systems, and computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools

  • Perform switching in the substation

  • Required to work safely at heights up to and exceeding two hundred eighty (280) feet.

  • May be required to work under hazardous conditions.

  • Requires wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  • May be required to cross-train in various crafts and operation departments at various times of the year.

  • Work outside in all types of weather conditions.

  • Work in small, enclosed areas, high places, dusty conditions and work independently under stressful conditions.

Position-Related Responsibilities: Wind Turbine Technician I

  • Monitors status of wind generation equipment operation. Responds to alarms and corrects abnormal conditions to maintain wind generation availability, capacity factor and performance.

  • Troubleshoots electrical, electronic, mechanical and computer problems, including by using voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, and hand/power tools. Corrects malfunctions and repairs equipment.

  • Develop procedures and schedules for inspections and maintenance activities.

  • Performs scheduled equipment inspections and maintenance including for FAA anti-collision lighting.

  • Performs scheduled environmental inspections including Spill Prevention Countermeasure and Control, Avian/Bat program, and other environmental compliance requirements.

  • Keep records and logs, and prepare reports.

  • Participates in climbing, rope rescue, electrical and other safety training activities.

  • Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned.

  • Implement routine service functions of a repetitive nature including component greasing and grease cleanup. This includes replacement of auto-grease canisters, oil filters, etc.

  • Replace equipment cabinet filters, lubricating, and hydraulic oil filters.

  • Provide general facility support including building, shop, tools, and equipment cleanup.

  • Complete maintenance work order sheets to document maintenance work performed.

  • Individuals may be assigned to drive forklift for purposes of equipment placement

  • Complete Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), JSA’s, and job specific documentation that is required to conduct maintenance and repairs in the safest manner possible

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean record Strong knowledge in electrical theory and troubleshooting techniques

  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office software, SQL Server software, facility management and reporting systems, and computerized diagnostic and troubleshooting tools

  • Familiarity with maintenance and electronic testing equipment (e.g., voltage testers, amp clamps, hydraulic torque equipment, alignment tools, and various hand and power tools) and with heavy equipment required for facility maintenance including working knowledge of crane and rigging requirements.

Position-Related Responsibilities: Wind Turbine Technician II

  • In support of site management and external contractors, perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of wind turbines. Ensure effective maintenance of wind turbine equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and instruments and controls.

  • Audits, inspects and verifies quality of work performed by contractors and other technicians, documents and report findings to management.

  • Develops design specifications for diagnostic test and monitoring equipment requirements for station equipment. Evaluates vendors and manufacturers of diagnostic test and monitoring equipment, and/or component applications to meet required specifications.

  • Conducts specialized studies related equipment performance and maintenance activities, and performs analysis of field data for various diagnostic tests and monitoring equipment. Provides facilitation and/or coordination for the design and implementation of maintenance program improvements.

  • Demonstrates a commitment to maintenance program philosophies. Must demonstrate effective communication, coordination, and team building skills in implementing maintenance programs.

  • Complete Lock-Out-Tag-Out (LOTO), JSA’s, and job specific documentation that is required to conduct maintenance and repairs in the safest manner possible.

  • Gathers and analyzes relevant information to develop and implement the best course of action to ensure job is completed successfully in a safe manner. Often works under minimal or no supervision. Resolves most questions and problems and refers only the most complex issues to higher level.

  • Develops personal, high level technical expertise on station equipment. Must be competent in personal computer operation and technical writing. Will be required to create various technical reports for data analysis and presentation.

  • Assists the Planner/Supervisor and Asset Manager in directing and/or coordinating the work of other area employees associated with an assignment. Consults on technical problems and exercises sound decision-making associated with field or group assignments.

  • Exhibits the ability to perform comprehensive technical studies and make recommendations in a timely fashion. Demonstrates the ability to identify viable alternatives to maintenance and operational practices within budgetary guidelines.

  • This position may provide services to affiliates of the Company subject to the UNS Energy Code of Conduct and the related Policies and Procedures.

  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possession of a valid driver’s license with a clean record.

Qualifications (Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.)

Level I

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and a two year associates degree or technical school certificate OR

  • A combination of education and experience and 1 year of directly related experience can be considered in lieu of a degree/technical certificate

  • Ability to climb turbine towers (280 ft+) daily is a requirement of this position

  • Ability to pass fit for duty testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of plant processes and operations, equipment, parts and wind farm plant layout.

  • Plant maintenance work experience; familiarity with electrical/mechanical equipment and interpretation of drawings.

  • Computer skills necessary to complete job requirements.

  • Experience working on Siemens and/or Gamesa wind turbines

  • Highly motivated self-starter with technical writing experience.

  • Perform technical analysis and problem solving.

  • Ability to exercise effective decision making.

  • Identify viable alternatives to maintenance and operations practices and problems.

  • Learn technical skills/procedures. Completes all internal requisite training/certification within designated time frames

Level II

Minimum Qualifications

  • In addition to Wind Turbine Technician I Minimum Qualifications:

  • Two year associates degree or technical school certificate AND

  • A minimum of 2 years of directly related work experience OR

  • 3+ years of directly related experience can be considered in lieu of a degree/technical certificate

  • Valid driver's license

  • Ability to climb turbine towers (280 ft+) daily is a requirement of this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Additional years of experience with wind turbines a plus

  • Experience with multiple wind turbine supplier technology, Siemens Gamasa preferred

  • High voltage and sub station maintenance experience

  • Familiarity with mechanical and electronic testing equipment (i.e. voltage testers, amp clamps, oscilloscopes, vibration analyst, infrared thermographer, lube analysis and various hand and power tools)

  • Knowledge of heavy equipment for facility maintenance and working knowledge of crane and rigging requirements

  • Strong aptitude to troubleshoot and repair electrical, electronic, mechanical, and computer equipment. Strong math and computer skills, capable of reading and interpreting various equipment schematics.

  • Knowledge of: plant processes and operations, equipment, parts and plant layout; budget preparation and analysis techniques.

  • A general knowledge of the TEP policies and procedures

  • Skilled in: computer skills necessary to complete job requirements; resolving problems; planning; project leadership.

  • Possess effective verbal and written skills.

  • Ability to:identify viable alternatives to operations and maintenance practices; solve problems; quickly learn technical skills; set objectives for area; prepare and interpret technical reports; document occurrences; prepare case histories and cost benefits.

  • Ability to direct teams and/or projects.

  • Accredited wind turbine certification or DRA training preferred.

Pay Rate: $65,000 - $90,000 + Depending on qualifications and experience
