Position Overview:

The Staff Accountant will be in the Controller’s Remittance Processing (i.e. Accounts Receivable) Department within Southern California Edison’s (SCE’s) Finance Organizational Unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for monthly journal entries, analyzing and monitoring balance sheet fluctuations, performing monthly budget to actual and comparative variance analysis, providing support for financial statement footnote disclosures; performing account reconciliations including identifying, investigating, and resolving invalid items and preparing correcting journal entries, and preparing internal and external reports to support audits, data analysis, regulatory filings/data requests. In addition, the successful candidate will recommend and implement process improvements to drive efficiencies in the organization and present conclusions to senior management, as well as planning, executing, troubleshooting as well as refining business processes across groups.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Interpret and apply GAAP and regulatory decisions in preparing transactions, documenting accounting policies, as well as providing accounting guidance to various operating units and assessing impact to the financial statements.

  • Prepare month-end accounting of accruals, prepaid expense amortization, and other business-related activity and journal entries for financial and regulatory purposes.

  • Perform monthly balance sheet variance analysis including identifying key drivers, reaching out to stakeholders, highlighting trends and analyzing causes of unexpected variances.

  • Complete data and transaction processing analysis involving energy and non-energy billings/receivables for proper disposition, including validating integrity of charges and resolving issues.

  • Perform critical account reconciliations such as customer account balances in the customer service system to energy receivables on the general ledger, as well as bank and cash accounts, which includes researching, analyzing and resolving receivable related issues between the sub-ledger and general ledger.

  • Develop and maintain accounting or financial models in support of financial and regulatory requirements.

  • Perform quarterly and annual compliance reporting and support data requests for various regulatory agencies.

  • Respond to internal/external data requests.

  • Support SCE’s financial reporting disclosures (10-Q/10-K) and MD&A requirements.

Qualifications

Minimium Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or related field.

  • Three or more years of experience in accounting or related field.

  • Must have experience with interpreting and applying Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

  • Must have experience with preparing journal entries and assisting with the monthly closing process at the corporate level.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant.

  • Experience in a public accounting firm or utility environment

  • Knowledge of regulated companies

  • Experience with Robotics Process Automation and Billing System Implementations.

  • Demonstrated experience performing account reconciliations.

  • Demonstrated experience performing variance analysis.

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with SAP or similar enterprise software.

  • Demonstrated experience complying with SOX controls.

  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, especially using Microsoft Excel and creating VLOOKUP Formulas and Pivot Tables.

  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills and ability to effectively communicate accounting issues and business processes.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with peers, clients, management, and other organizations.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work across functions and departments in analyzing information developing information and solutions.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to integrate work across relevant areas, develop the business and services to enhance customer satisfaction and productivity, manage risks appropriately, develop and execute business plans, manage information, and provide exceptional service to internal and external customers.

  • Must demonstrate effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, and team building skills, as well as the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Demonstrated ability to follow Edison safety protocols and safe work practices.
