SCE manages a large portfolio of power resources that are bid everyday into the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) market. The Sr. Mgr., Resource Optimization oversees the bidding strategies for SCE’s contracted and utility owned generation in a way that maximizes value to customers. This role manages a team of professionals and engages in market design initiatives, resource plan development, and regulatory relations, while ensuring all processes meet internal and external compliance requirements.

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • You will be part of the trading and market operations team responsible for a variety of daily tasks that ensure SCE’s energy portfolio is represented in a way that maximizes value and reduces risk. Responsibilities include:

  • Developing resource plans for week-ahead and day-ahead operations, and maintaining User Developed Applications (UDA) and master files for all resource types. (i.e., energy storage, renewables, large hydro, gas-fired generation, demand response, etc.).

  • Managing compliance with the CPUC’s Least Cost Dispatch requirement and in adherence of other relevant requirements (e.g., company risk management, ISO/RTO, FERC, and CPUC).

  • Managing after-the-fact analysis on bidding strategies and using results to guide strategy course correction and improve implementation.

  • Making timely adjustments to account for operational or plant outages, system emergencies, or changing grid conditions.

  • Leading and participating in market design enhancement activities, including drafting proposals or comments on CAISO market design initiatives.

  • Overseeing preparation of required regulatory compliance filings including the annual Energy Resource Recovery Application (ERRA) filing, and data requests.Managing the on-boarding of new generation resources into SCE’s generation portfolio by capturing operating characteristics in the resource masterfile, and ensuring resources are always accurately represented in the CAISO market.


The Essentials

  • Five years of asset management, resource optimization or planning, and/or market and grid operations experience.

  • Knowledge and understanding of generation resources and technology characteristics.

  • Understanding of the operating rules and regulatory requirements of California’s energy markets, including knowledge of CAISO, CPUC and FERC

  • Requires active problem-solver and analytical ability to propose solutions and recommend improvements.

  • Must be able to make decisions or recommendations guided by compliance requirements, company policies, procedures, rules, or management directions.

The Preferred

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Economics, Finance, or Business.

  • Eight years of asset management, resource optimization, energy market operations and/or planning based work experience

  • Ten years of experience managing one or more organizations, units or project teams

  • Experience working with one or more supply-side resources and technology characteristics.

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

You should know…

Work Mode : When a return-to-office date has been determined, this position’s work mode is hybrid . The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.
