About Energy Contract Management

Energy Contract Management (ECM) manages and administers SCE's energy-related contracts, by enforcing the provisions of all executed Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) during project development and throughout the term of the PPA.

Position Overview

The Settlements Operations Specialist rotational role in Energy Contract Management (ECM) is geared toward early-career professionals to serve as an in-depth introduction to the settlement of a varied portfolio of contracts from simple to very complex in structure. The successful candidate will utilize analytical proficiency and collaborative work skills to support all areas of Settlements by rotating through each of the functional areas, all critical to providing safe, reliable, affordable, and clean energy to SCE’s customers. The rotational Specialist will serve approximately 12 months in Contract Settlements and 12 months in CAISO Settlements for a total of two years on the job. After two years, the rotational Specialist will join the Settlements Development team to support RFO contract solicitations and negotiation, contract administration of energy contracts, provide analytical support to ensure contract compliance and dispute management. The successful candidate will play a critical cross-functional role within each area in Settlements to ensure business readiness, performing settlements for power procurement agreements, and validating that the CAISO accurately settles market charges with SCE.

The position will ultimately report directly to the Senior Manager of Settlements Development Support. The successful candidate will have strong project management and communication skills. Intellectual curiosity and strong drive are required.

Typical Responsibilities:

  • Solve problems and perform analyses of new business situations through coordination across the Settlement functions.

  • Evaluate and manage contract requirements, review payments, manage disputes and make strategic recommendations to maximize benefits to customers

  • Provide support related to origination activities, including participation in RFO contract solicitations and negotiation, pro forma development, contract administration, and dispute management of agreements for buying, selling, and transporting of energy-related products such as bilateral power and natural gas, renewable and alternative power, combined heat and power, transmission, and emissions.

  • Interprets contract payment terms into formula equivalents.

  • Knowledgeable about sources of data and resources available to integrate and present information regarding contract terms and CAISO market mechanisms as it relates to settlements.

  • Utilizes existing or devises new, innovative models and methodologies to correlate large volumes of data into contract payments.

  • Perform queries to formulate algorithms and create macros.

  • Understands system capabilities and communicates contract settlements business knowledge.

  • Understands ISO markets and correlations to SCE’s power contract payments.

  • Establishes recommendations and conclusions based on analysis of data.

  • Identify and execute process improvement opportunities across existing processes within the Settlements group.

  • Maintains a safety conscious work environment by following Edison safety protocols and safe work practices; and performing other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

  • Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Three (3) or more years of work experience with financial analysis, contract settlements, contract management, electricity trading or marketing, and/or project management.

  • Intermediate experience using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to prepare reports and present complex technical information to a wide audience, in non-technical language.

  • Strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, initiative, and interpersonal skills as well as the ability to effectively multi-task and enthusiastically engage in continuous learning.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with electricity markets in functions related to contract settlements, contract management, electricity trading or marketing, including experience with calculating payments for energy and capacity contracts such as renewables, conventional power, combined heat and power, demand response, energy storage and/or natural gas.

  • Experience analyzing complex financial, regulatory, and/or business problems.

  • Understanding of the CAISO or other energy market design.

  • Experience with CAISO Settlements and energy and capacity markets.

  • Effective project management skills, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovations.

  • Experience researching information, analyzing it, preparing reports and making recommendations.

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Experience completing multiple projects concurrently while adjusting to changing priorities.

  • Experience interfacing and collaborating with clients, peers, management, and other cross-functional teams.
