About Asset Management & Generation Strategy (AM&GS):

We are an existing division of approximately 30 employees reporting to the Director of Generation. AM&GS is responsible for optimizing Generation’s assets. This includes everything from asset strategy, risk analysis, benchmarking, investment decisions and market optimization. Generation's fleet includes; hydro, gas, solar, and energy storage as well as the water and gas utilities on Catalina Island.

The Job....

This position will lead a group of Managers overseeing engineers, technical advisors, project managers and economic specialists providing analysis and recommendations for critical decisions regarding generation assets. The objective of the organization is to optimize the efficiency, market value, generation cost, reliability and sustainability of our generation portfolio through informed asset management strategies.

Day to day responsibilities will include…

  • Lead all asset management and generation strategy functions for our utility owned generation assets. Direct asset strategy, asset performance engineering, plant engineering, condition monitoring & analytics, CAISO market revenue optimization, performance planning / performance reporting, standardized work management and risk assessments in the Generation department.

  • Direct the development and alignment of asset management policy, strategy, objectives and plans. Provide leadership and directional oversight to the following core generation functions: process optimization and standardization, technical troubleshooting, business reporting and analysis, incident management, compliance monitoring, maintenance management, root cause analysis and mitigation, “betterment engineering”, equipment improvements, benchmarking and performance planning.

  • Pursue projects which improve asset utilization and/or enhance resource characteristics and related economic value for SCE’s customers. Provide strategic direction for managing availability of Company owned or controlled generation resources. Lead the functioning and continuous improvement of the entire portfolio and asset optimization process. Lead the water resource optimization for all our hydro generation units including managing year ahead, seasonal, and short-term planning activities. Offer strategic direction to production departments and manage hydro modeling and optimization functions for their optimal market participation and dispatch. Directs all hydro departments on asset optimization initiatives which maximize overall value of SCE’s hydro assets.

  • Identify, evaluate and develop proposals for special projects or investment opportunities to optimize existing assets and/or to gain optimal performance which would maximize the value of the generation portfolio in CAISO markets.

  • Liaise between asset operators and market facing / analysis teams to identify portfolio operational needs and to provide forecasted market values of energy, capacity, and ancillary services to inform operational and strategic decision-making.

  • Manage resources and budget levels to meet strategic objectives and operational needs. Make, recommend and/or approve employment decisions (e.g., hiring, promotion, appropriate pay, rewards/recognition, succession planning, and termination). Manage employee performance for both direct and/or matrixed reports. Establish performance expectations and goals aligned with Company objectives, policies and procedures. Manage, train and develop staff by providing timely feedback, coaching and support.

Qualifications

Qualifications we need from you....

  • Seven (7) or more years of asset management, resource optimization, financial planning, energy markets and/or planning based work experience.

  • Two or more years of experience managing an organization, units or team.

  • Experience in integrated decision making environments where economic, operational and other factors must be balanced to reach an optimal result.

Other things we seek that set you up for success in our organization...

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Economics, Finance, Business or related discipline.

  • Professional Engineer certification.

  • In-depth understanding of the California energy markets, including operating rules and regulatory requirements of the CAISO, CPUC and FERC.

  • Extensive knowledge of Hydro/fossil generation facilities.

  • Candidate must have excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to present complex technical information in non-technical language.

  • Experience in presentation to peer and senior Management (Director, VP, & SVP).

  • Customer/client focused.

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels in the organization

  • Relocation is available for this position.

  • You are legally authorized to work directly as employee for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • Position could require up to 20% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
