LANDSCAPE

The electric power business is in a period of significant shifts, including public policy toward heightened environmental protection and energy security, and advances in environmental and “smart grid” technologies. As a result, all major elements of the business – generation, energy delivery and customer usage – are in transition at the same time.

The State of California is a leader in environmental policy and continues to increase expectations for carbon reduction and air quality improvements across the state. These policies have significant implications on Southern California Edison’s business – both opportunities to strengthen electric utilities’ role in the California economy and challenges to their current business model. Currently, SCE is leading the industry in the use and development of renewable energy, energy efficiency programs, and electric transportation.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Head of Reporting and Technical Accounting leads the financial reporting team and crafts a strategic vision for all technical accounting efforts. The individual drives the accuracy and consistency of the monthly and quarterly earnings process, delivers analysis of critical transactions, and explains accounting concepts company-wide, including to our senior leaders. The Head of Reporting and Technical accounting engages and develops accounting talent and advances innovative solutions to financial challenges. The individual is also charged with developing accounting knowledge across the Controllers department.

This role sits within the finance function at Southern California Edison and Edison International and will have direct exposure to the C-suite, due to the strategic nature of accounting and the importance of financial reporting as the primary communication vehicle to investors. This influential leader will be tasked with providing crucial information to the leadership team and broader organization. S/he will work with various business partners to understand their businesses requirements and will provide financial analysis and insights to meet those requirements.

The Head of Reporting and Technical Accounting will be joining and leading a highly collaborative and high performing team. This person will be a manager of mangers and an accounting leader in the EIX and SCE finance organization. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Leading your team to draft and review SEC financial statements and disclosures. Develop new disclosures.

  • Communicate disclosure implications of key transactions to senior leadership team including CAO, CEO, CFO, and SVP Investor Relations.

  • Review the monthly consolidated financial statements and earnings package, including variance analysis. Present results to CAO and CFOs of SCE and EIX.

  • Provide technical accounting expertise by analyzing complex transactions and delivering strategic insights across the company to make sure these impacts are widely understood.

  • Drive strategic outcomes in the US power industry through active participation in industry advisory committees, formal presentations, informal conversations, and networking.

  • Hire, develop, and retain top talent with diverse skills and backgrounds. Nurture and develop accounting skills across the organization through The Accounting Guru program.

Build strong partnerships with Financial Planning, Operational Finance, Investor Relations, Tax, Law, Energy Procurement, and other key stakeholders to advance financial goals and shape successful outcomes for complex problems.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ten (10) years of work experience including five years in an accounting management role.

  • Up to three (3) years in public accounting managing audits of public companies. Big 4 experience preferred.

  • CPA required (active or inactive).

  • Expertise drafting and/or reviewing SEC financial statements and disclosures including interpreting and applying Regulation S-X and S-K.

  • Previous experience leading an SEC and/or accounting policy team.

  • Experience with audits of 401k and benefit plans, preferred

  • Expertise with SOX and internal controls, preferred.

  • Possesses the leadership/gravitas and executive presence to interface regularly with C-suite executives.

  • Strong “player-coach” with the ability to motivate, train, and recruit great talent. Low ego needs.

  • Can provide examples of developing and leading teams to reach their highest potential. Overall ability to strengthen a team and a track record of mentoring teams.

  • Experience at a utility company or within highly regulated industry is a plus, but not required.

EDUCATION

Bachelor’s degree in accounting, economics, business or related discipline, a must. Master’s degree, or equivalent experience, preferred.
