Department Overview

The Electric Transmission Operations Engineering Department provides comprehensive engineering solutions to improve transmission system reliability and enable future growth of the Electric Transmission Grid. The department provides outstanding engineering support to Transmission System Operations Department by resolving complex issues via implementation of state-of-the-art technology. The RAS Operations team provides operational, engineering, and project management support for the San Francisco RAS (SFRAS) and 500 kV Pacific Intertie RAS (PACIRAS) systems. In addition, RAS Operations provides central ownership for PG&E’s Special Protection Schemes (SPS).

Position Summary

As a member of the RAS Operations Team, the Senior RAS Operations Engineer will support PACIRAS and SFRAS system operations, continuous improvement projects, and compliance initiatives in Vacaville, San Francisco and Rocklin.

The Senior RAS Operations Engineer is responsible for leading engineering and design of complex projects.

  • Applies extensive knowledge of concepts, principles, and practices to resolve complex problems with only general direction.

  • Provides leadership, coaching, technical direction, knowledge transfer and assistance to technical employees and teams.

  • Works with limited guidance to complete assignments of broad scope and complexity with few precedents or standards, and assignments that require integration of information from a variety of sources.

The successful candidate is required to participate in the on-call rotation schedule providing after hours technical support. The successful candidate is expected to hit the ground running and must have detailed hands-on experience with the RAS Operations systems, or systems very similar.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

A reasonable salary range is:​

  • Minimum (California) $112,000.00

  • Maximum (California) $179,000.00

Responsibilities

  • Support day-to-day operations and maintenance activities for PACIRAS and SFRAS.

  • Respond to questions about the operational status of the RAS systems.

  • Participate in fact-finding and troubleshooting efforts.

  • Review clearance requests and provide responses on behalf of the RAS Team

  • Assist with communications around operational support activities with key RAS Stakeholders such as System Dispatch, System Protection, Operations Engineering and ENOC.

  • Support control system projects including system and application design, updates and testing along multiple interrelated technical knowledge areas.

  • HMI graphics, scripting, data flow and communications.

  • Industrial Control System specification, installation, configuration, programming and testing.

  • Technical documentation.

  • Perform troubleshooting tasks for all systems.

  • Support assorted project tasks as assigned.

  • Support all NERC CIP and other compliance related activities including system testing and documentation.

  • Participate in on-call rotation.

Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent relevant work experience.

  • 5 or more years in a RAS systems or power systems or control systems environment.

Desired:

  • 3 years equivalent work experience in a technical work position such as an electrical, mechanical, communications or computer technician or other similar technical work may substitute for the engineering degree.

  • Safety, compliance and reliability mindset.

  • The successful candidate will demonstrate hands-on work experience with many of the following Industrial Automation and System Integration skills:

  • HMI/SCADA specification, graphics development, scripting and animation, database integration (MS-SQL) and industrial device communications.

  • Experience with Indusoft Web Studio or AVEVA Edge a plus

  • Experience with VBScript a plus

  • PLC programming and testing using relay ladder logic or similar language

  • Experience with C/C++ a plus

  • Experience with function blocks a plus

  • Integrated Systems Troubleshooting including:

  • Industrial data communications protocols (IEC 61850, OPC, MODBUS, etc.).

  • Windows operating system, Active Directory and network communications

  • Control systems device configuration, analog and discrete I/O and communications

  • Sensors and instrumentation

  • Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) configuration, programming and operation (for example, GE and RFL relays, Eaton SMP Gateways, etc.).

  • Software testing/integration for real-time systems

  • Writing technical documentation for both technical and non-technical audiences

  • Prior electric utility experience is desirable such as:

  • Working knowledge of Remedial Action Schemes, Special Protection Systems, data communications, and network communications.

  • Operational knowledge of the PG&E Transmission System.

  • Experience with PG&E practices and standards.

  • Experience working in a compliance environment. Specific experience with NERC CIP compliance a plus

  • Ability to work independently as the work requires

  • Ability to work collaboratively with other highly skilled peers, as well as differently skilled peers both within and across departments.

  • Ability to interact face to face with peers, internal customers, consultants and leaders.

  • Experience working in a compliance environment. Specific experience with NERC CIP compliance a plus

  • Experience training others on technical and procedural matters.

  • Experience with Human Performance Tools (e.g. three-way communication, phonetic alphabet, etc.)

  • Experience working with a corporate networked environment using such tools as web browsers, SharePoint, network-based applications and portals.

  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio). In other words, having a good handle on how to format documents and presentations, using styles and templates, formulas and various levels of automation in Excel.
