Job Summary

This position requires the applicant to have a background in the electric utility industry with a minimum of 6 years of experience and possess an Electrical Engineering degree, ABET accredited.

This role is the top progression level position in the engineer series. Includes senior to technical expert engineers, able to perform difficult and complex work requiring thorough knowledge of the subject matter and significant experience within functional assignment area. Schedules and coordinates major segments of complex projects to meet cost and time objectives. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered and develops engineering criteria ensuring compliance with design criteria and standards. At higher levels of proficiency within this classification, incumbents are expected to provide technical expertise and/or team leadership as needed. May be required to apply intensive and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices to major projects that have significant impact on programs in varied areas and related fields. May serve as a technical expert on engineering related legal and regulatory issues to outside entities.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop annual facility load projections for both distribution circuits and transformers

  • Identify normal thermal overload conditions on distribution circuits and distribution substation transformers through load projections

  • Utilize Synergi and load flow modeling to identify overloaded fuses, devices, step-down transformers, and conductors

  • Develop summer and winter substation transformer contingencies

  • Develop protective device defeat at peak settings (DAP) for Loop Scheme automation

  • Prepare Project Scopes and estimates to solve thermal overload conditions that occur at peak operating times

  • Prepare detailed project scopes and cost estimates for identified solutions for Distributed Generation Interconnects on circuits and substations in assigned planning areas

  • Perform voltage study analysis using Synergi (Distribution Software) and recommend corrective actions on existing circuits or proposed circuits.

  • Provide technical assistance to ROC and Operations on circuit or transformer planned outages or emergency outages when requested

  • Provide independent planning technical development and support of privatized facilities

  • Enter and evaluate proposed projects in the Investment Management Tool for benefit analysis

Perform other duties which include participating in Storm Restoration, representing Distribution at outside group meetings, and required operational activities.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience

  • 4-year, ABET accredited, Electrical Engineering degree.

  • Minimum 6 years of electric utility or relevant experience.

  • Solid knowledge in the design and construction of electric distribution facilities and operation.

  • Good understanding of underground distribution architecture (Cable, Duct Bank, Switches, Vaults)

  • Proficient in or ability to learn modeling application skills such as Synergi.

  • Solid understanding of AC fundamentals and three-phase power systems.

  • Ability to think analytically and solve technical problems.

  • Ability to interpret technical literature such as national codes, industry guides/standards, regulations and policies.

  • Effective oral, interpersonal and written communication skills.

  • Solid team player and works well with others.

  • Strong project management skills

  • Strong ability to lead and communicate with Project Management on both Distribution and Substation projects.

  • Self-motivator who has the ability to work cooperatively in a team environment, but is also comfortable with working independently to get things done.

  • Strong time management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to react promptly to urgent matters while ensuring planned work doesn’t fall behind.

  • Experience with interpreting technical drawings (i.e., wiring diagrams, logic diagrams, oneline diagrams)

  • Valid driver's license

  • Must be able to meet NERC qualifications.

    Must possess one of the following:

  • 4-year engineering degree from an ABET accredited engineering program based on the year that the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • 4-year engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country’s own engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that will recognized by the country’s accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved, or

  • 4-year engineering degree from a non-ABET accredited program and a post-graduate engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • 4-year degree in Physics, Chemistry or Math and post-graduate electrical engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same engineering discipline is ABET accredited based on the year the engineering program was accredited by ABET, or

  • A current, valid U.S. Professional Engineering license.
