LOCATION: Rapid City, SD

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Support and assist with various Distribution Planning projects as assigned within the Company’s Transmission & Distribution Planning Department. These projects will be assigned consistent with the Company’s Internship Program with an emphasis on developing an understanding of the Company’s multiple business units and enhancing the intern’s ability to apply his/her engineering education in a professional environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Distribution Planning Supervisor with further direction and support from Engineers within this team.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Project assignments may include:

  • Reconcile electric system model database with equipment design and operating data

  • Includes line impedance, protection system, voltage and reactive power control data

  • Assist with distribution system modeling and planning studies and associated documentation

  • Engineer and design electrical system projects and upgrades

  • Develop and coordinate equipment standards and maintenance procedures

  • Provide engineering support to Engineers, Drafting Technicians and other technical groups

  • Assist with project construction

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Additional projects may be assigned as needed.

  • Adherence to all safety policies, practices, and procedures to assure a safe working environment

  • Assist and support the other engineering and maintenance activities within the department

  • Support safety, diversity, and social responsibility goals of the department, business unit and corporation

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Maintain professional working relationships with internal and external departments, utilities, customers and agencies.

  • Promote a collaborative working environment with co-workers.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience with connecting to field installed equipment via laptop computer is desirable.

  • Prior experience at utility or industrial company desirable.

EDUCATION:

  • College sophomore or above working toward Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a Power or Control Systems emphasis.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5.

KNOWLEDGE:

  • Basic knowledge of electrical engineering principles.

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office.

SKILLS/ABILITY/OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to prepare and give presentations.

  • Detail oriented and organized.

  • Ability to perform work efficiently, learning to monitor effort in accordance with deadlines.

  • Employ standard engineering methods and practices in performing work.

  • Ability to concurrently work on multiple projects independently or as part of a team.

  • Motivated self-starter.

CERTIFICATIONS/CREDENTIALS:

  • None required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Participation in the Company’s Industry Orientation Experiences, which will include some travel and overnight stays.

  • Prepare and present a synopsis of experience with the Company at the end of the internship.
