Duke Energy is currently seeking a highly motivated student for a summer internship opportunity within our Coal Combustion Product (CCP) Operations and Maintenance Carolina East group. As a CCP engineering intern, you will be assisting System Owners providing support on dam inspections, small projects, and identifying process improvement opportunities. In addition, you will assist in driving consistency at Duke’s ash beneficiation sites. You will not only gain exposure to a wide range of civil engineering and project management, operations and maintenance opportunities, you will also acquire critical insight into our company and our industry. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to gain valuable networking connections which will help prepare and develop your skills for future career opportunities in the electrical utility industry.
Your work activities may involve the following areas:
Civil Engineering Student - You may assist engineers with: Inspections, design and construction of small O&M projects; help generate standards across ash beneficiation sites; review inspection reports; perform project tasks; update operating manuals and interface agreements, learn compliance with regulations. Team with system owners and/or construction specialists to verify consistent approach to operations of the ash beneficiation units, ash excavation, and pond dewatering.
Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, appropriate clothing, ear plugs, fall protection, steel toe shoes, etc.) as needed.
Office and plant environment - requires walking, light lifting, infrequent climbing, and occasional exposure to temperature and noise.
25 to 50% travel will be required.
Currently enrolled and pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (not engineering technology) from an ABET accredited institute (ABET Accreditation can be verified here: http://main.abet.org/aps/Accreditedprogramsearch.aspx)
Minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher
Minimum of three years of completed course work
Valid driver’s license
Class status as a Junior
Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
Technical proficiency in MS Office (i.e.- experience using MS Excel)
Desire to pursue a career in the energy industry
Experience with power plant or power related equipment or components
Experience with geotechnical engineering
Ability to deliver superior results within allocated time through effective prioritization, scheduling, planning and execution of assigned work
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, be a self-starter, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities
Demonstrated problem solving and analysis skills
Ability to interface with all levels of management
Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work independently
Demonstrated leadership qualities through effective decision making
