Note: this position may be filled as an Engineer III or one level higher as a Senior Engineer dependent upon a selected candidate's experience.

This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for design of new and existing substations and related equipment. Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material.

The person in this position will act as the teams primary grounding resource and will be the main internal point of contact for grounding design, and coordinating soil resistivity testing for substation projects. The person in this position will also be responsible for grounding studies (contracted or performed internally) for substation projects.

Additionally, the person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of substations, detailed designs of substations, plan and section drawings and other plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, circuit breakers and other major equipment as well as other civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.

Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (approximately 25%); must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies. Alternate work schedules, including ½ day Friday and Alternate Friday off, are available.

Basic/Required Qualifications - Engineer III

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. engineering degree.

Minimum of 4 years relevant engineering experience. (If internal hire, experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets", “Valued Contributor”, or better in final two (2) Performance Impact ratings).

Key Skills/Experience: Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles. Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations. Good written and oral communication skills.

Basic/Required Qualifications - Senior Engineer

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program OR state registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.). A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience with a P.E. or six plus years without a P.E.. (If internal hire, experience must have been attained at a "Fully Meets", “Valued Contributor”, or better in final two (2) Performance Impact ratings).

Key Skills/Experience: Proficient in engineering theories and principles. Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations. Good written and oral communication skills.

Desired Qualifications

Electrical (preferred) or Mechanical Engineering Degree

Electrical Substation grounding experience

Experience in the electric utility industry

Demonstrated good understanding of Substation principles and elements associated with their design, as well as the ability to produce construction documents

Demonstrated proficiency with engineering computer packages – preferably WinIGS, CDEGS, Microstation, AutoCAD, or MathCAD.

Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.

Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.

Experience and demonstrated written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present information, facilitate meetings and provide direction to others.

Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

Understanding of basic principles of project management

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

• Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

• Experience in the utility industry.

• Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

• Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

• Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations.
