Your Impact at SAM

The Construction Inspector II is responsible for working with others to inspect construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractor constructs improvements in accordance with plans and specifications. This role is typically more responsible to a more senior inspector and a licensed professional engineer who has full authority for final approval of all engineering-related work. The work requires contact with client, typically a governmental agency and private entities including construction contractors.

  • Under the review and direction of Project Manager, perform field inspection and oversight of construction activities.Maintain electronic daily reports of inspection duties along with detail records of project progress, activities, and any other documentation requested by the client

  • Detailed documentation skills a must

  • Must possess good interpersonal and communication skills

  • Able to read and interpret plans, specifications and applicable standards

  • Commensurate with experience, review contract documents to verify compliance with State, Municipal, and/or governmental regulations and conformance with project requirements

  • Assist with coordinating materials sampling and testing and verifying sufficient testing has been performed

  • Perform any material sampling and/or testing as required by project or state specifications

  • Ability to coordinate with contractors’ staff and effectively communicate with all parties

  • Performs standard mathematical calculations. Proficient with electronics such as an iPad, and comfortable using Outlook, Excel, Word, Doc-u-Sign, Share-point, Share-plus software

  • Highly motivated and works well with minimal supervision and with the ability to use one’s own judgement and make informed decisions

  • Good verbal and written communication skills and ability to communicate effectively with contractor, client representatives, owner personnel and other Construction Inspectors

  • Ability to observe contractor’s daily field operations and record clearly into a daily field report including description of work performed and field test data results

  • The physical ability to lift 50 pounds, walk over rough terrain, to stoop, bend, kneel, twist, use hands and arms to reach and grasp objects above the head, to sit, to climb and balance, to work in confined spaces or at heights above 6 feet with adequate vision to perform these tasks outside in various weather for shifts lasting up to 12 hours if necessary

  • Able and willing to work day or night shifts and/or flexible schedules as required to support the project requirements

  • Ability to work 40+ hours a week when needed and to work weekends as needed

  • Perform other tasks as assigned to help accomplish the Company’s strategic goals

  • Safely operate a full-size pick-up company truck potentially in a construction work zone and/or high traffic environment in accordance with SAM’s driving policy

  • Properly wear and/or use PPE daily

  • Ability the measure and/or quantify any pay items in the field and perform the necessary mathematic calculations

  • Able to accept assignments requiring extended travel to project perform inspection tasks, to attend preconstruction meetings, project progress meetings, etc.

What You Bring to SAM

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • 0 to 3 years of experience in Construction Engineering & Inspection (CEI) for transportation project as described herein preferred. Direct field experience as a Contractor or materials-testing technician can substitute for Construction Inspection experience on a case-by-case basis

  • Familiarity with Share-Plus software and familiarity with the use of an iPad is preferred

  • Experience with Primavera and Microsoft Outlook and other scheduling software preferred, but not required

  • Must have functional computer skills to include Microsoft Word and Excel

  • Must have the ability to complete inspector certification courses. Examples include NCDOT classes in hot-mix asphalt and ACI concrete sampling and testing

  • Highly motivated and works well with minimal supervision

  • Thorough knowledge of NCDOT specifications and standards with ability and willingness to study and advance relevant knowledge outside of work is preferred

Certifications and/or Licensing Requirements

Field testing certifications through NCDOT and/or ACI is preferred, but not required
