PPL Corporation Relay Protection Technician in Providence, Rhode Island

Responsibilities

Basic Job Responsibilities:

  • Assists the project technician with the installation, setting, testing, and verifying the correct operation of protective relay and control systems.

  • Assists in the verification of the correct installation and performance of analog input devices, including current and voltage transformers.

  • Assists in the functional testing of new wiring within control circuits to ensure correct design and performance.

  • Assists in the timely completion of all project-related documentation, including schematic and wiring drawings and setting records.

  • Assists in periodic testing and inspection of electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor-based relay systems using a variety of complex test equipment.

  • Assists in the timely completion of all maintenance related documentation including relay maintenance test reports and test cards.

  • Assists in the performance of periodic functional trip and breaker failure testing of relay systems.

  • Assists in providing technical and physical support to other departments while maintaining continuity of service with total customer satisfaction.

  • Assists in the collection of all available data from all sources, including other departments, transient fault and sequence of events recorders and relays equipped with oscillographs and event recording capability.

  • Assists in the resolution of operation investigations which includes the development and application of special tests and prepares operation investigation reports that are neat, orderly, and issued in a timely fashion.

  • Inform the supervisor promptly of critical issues, including safety, system disturbances, customer reliability or economics that affect the department or company.

  • The Associate Relay Technician promotes and supports all company goals and objectives, while conducting all activities with cost awareness and fiscal responsibility.

Basic Qualifications:

  • ASEE or BSET degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering.

  • Possess effective verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work in a team environment.

  • Must have demonstrated analytical skills and ingenuity.

  • Must be proficient with software applications required for the position.

  • Must be available for overtime as needed.

  • Must have a high degree of mechanical ability.

  • Must have the ability to qualify for the National Grid Clearance and Control List.

  • Ability and resourcefulness to work effectively under pressure to solve problems and complete all projects on time.

  • Must be able to respond to system emergencies and be available for overtime as workload requires.

  • Overnight travel is required on occasion to meet department workloads and training requirements.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Level II

In addition to the basic job responsibilities:

  • Ability to perform the function of project technician on projects that are limited in scope.

  • Performs periodic testing and inspection of electromechanical, solid state and microprocessor-based relay systems using a variety of complex test equipment.

  • Completes in a timely fashion all maintenance related documentation including relay maintenance test reports and test cards.

  • Provides technical and physical support to other departments while maintaining continuity of service with total customer satisfaction.

  • Gathers all available data from all sources, including other departments, transient fault and sequence of events recorders and relays equipped with oscillographs and event recording capability.

In Addition to basic qualifications:

  • One to two years of experience in system protection and control.

  • Highly motivated and self-directed.

Senior

In addition to basic and level II job responsibilities:

  • Performs the role of project technician during the installation, setting, testing, and verifying the correct operation of protective relay and control systems.

  • Assumes the responsibility for the verification of the correct installation and performance of analog input devices, including current and voltage transformers.

  • Assumes responsibility for the functional testing of new wiring within control circuits to ensure correct design and performance.

  • Ensures the timely completion of all project-related documentation, including schematic and wiring drawings and setting records.

  • Performs periodic functional trip and breaker failure testing of relay systems.

  • Develops and implements test procedures that will consistently and effectively uncover defects in design and performance.

  • Assists in the resolution of operation investigations which includes the development and application of special tests.

  • Analyze test results and data to make appropriate recommendations for follow up actions for system disturbances.

  • Responsible for the preparation of operation investigation reports that are neat, orderly, and issued in a timely fashion.

  • Assists in the guidance and instruction of less experienced technicians at any system location.

In addition to the basic and level II qualifications:

  • Five to seven years of experience in system protection and control.

  • Ability to provide a leadership role within a team environment.

  • Must have completed training in advanced relay systems.

Lead

In addition to basic, level II, and senior job responsibilities:

  • Assists the supervisor with scheduling of department work including capital and O&M projects.

  • Assists the supervisor with labor estimates for capital projects.

  • Represents the supervisor at meetings and is the acting supervisor during supervisors’ absence.

In addition to the basic, level II, and senior qualifications:

  • Five to seven years of experience in system protection and control.
