Brief Posting Description

Assists journeymen Machinist/Mechanic within the scope of current step grade level and performs high quality power plant machining of all types and performs hands on mechanical maintenance tasks under the direction of the Mechanical Supervisor. Performs machining repairs and fabrication as assigned utilizing established processes and techniques within time, scope and quality expectations. Performs routine, regular maintenance as assigned within time and scope expectations and within defined guidelines.

Job Requirements


Education and Training:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Successful completion of a vocational or technical school program including a machinist curriculum and/or equivalent education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

  • Requires ability to use any/all tools and equipment required for mechanical and machinist maintenance function.

  • Exercises sound technical judgment and skill when performing maintenance tasks.

  • Requires good visual ability to perform precision machining.


  • Zero (0) to five (5) years industrial or power plant machinist and mechanical maintenance experience. (Step level is determined by amount of related experience.)


  • Must successfully pass a hands-on machinist certification test.

  • Must pass a Mechanical Comprehension test and a machinist aptitude test prior to accepting the position.

  • Must pass Tri-State's battery of tests.

  • Must have a valid driver's license.

  • Must be able to demonstrate that he or she can perform all of the essential functions of the position.

  • Physical demands : While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is required to stand and walk for long periods of time and occasionally stoop, bend, reach above and below shoulder level and lift up to 50 lbs. Incumbent is frequently required to use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. Incumbent must have finger dexterity, good vision, good color vision, good hearing, and ability to speak clearly, and handle intricate work.

  • Mental demands: While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is required to read, write, perform basic math, analyze data and reports, exercise judgment, develop plans, procedures and goals, and present information to others and work under pressure.

  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is exposed to dust and exposed to risks common to performing machinist and mechanical maintenance work in a power plant environment, and works around large industrial operating equipment.
