What is an SAP ABAP Developer?
The SAP ABAP Developer is responsible for actively participating in the development of business solutions based on functional and technical requirements. Additionally, it is the responsibility of the SAP ABAP Developer to continuously improve the processes and code within the SAP system to better support the business. Responsibilities could change as the needs of the department evolve. Title/level is commensurate with experience.
What does an SAP ABAP Developer do?
Performs SAP system analysis, design, development and production support activities within SAP’s S/4 Hana system; demonstrates a high-level understanding of standard SAP data structures & processes
Supports all phases of the System Development Lifecycle (SDLC) including analysis, design, development, testing and implementation along with the generation of required documentation throughout each phase of the project
Collaborates with business users and other SAP technical staff to develop, implement and execute upon the requirements of the business through complex ABAP programming, testing, documentation and debugging functions related to the implementation of SAP S/4 modules
Regularly communicates with business users and functional team to understand the requirements from provided functional designs or business requirements/use cases and transforms these requirements into the technical designs
Builds professional relationships with management, business representatives, and team members to ensure delivery of proposed solutions, support for development of business possibilities and professional development
Participates in troubleshooting incidents reported to IT and assists in identifying root cause of any issues
Actively participates in industry communities to continuously expand upon knowledge and improve the standards and awareness of the company’s SAP practices
What does it take to be an SAP ABAP Developer?
Bachelor’s degree and at least 2 years of related professional experience in areas such as SAP development or administration, systems programming, information systems development or a closely related field. In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, candidates with an Associate’s degree and at least 5 years of related professional experience (stated above) will be considered.
Experience developing in ABAP within the SAP ECC or S/4 Hana platform
Must demonstrate the willingness to work in a collaborative team environment to deliver a quality product and interact effectively with individuals at all levels
Ability to be flexible and adaptable in the face of changing organizational technology, processes, and priorities
Demonstrated strong problem solving, analytical skills and strategic thinking ability
Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
Valid driver’s license
Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology or STEM field; Master’s degree
Hands-on experience implementing within large, transformational projects
Experience in large implementations of SAP R3 or S4
Basic knowledge of ERP systems in the utility industry
