What is an Electrical Engineer?

This job posting is specific to our Electric Engineering Group. An Electrical Engineer performs engineering assignments related to the planning/scoping, design, construction, operation, maintenance and performance of the company’s electric system. Currently, the company is seeking experienced engineers in Electric Substation Design, Electric Transmission Planning & Interconnections, Electric Distribution Planning & Interconnections and additional areas. Title/level is commensurate with experience.

What does an Electrical Engineer do?

  • Develops long term plans for the electric distribution system to improve reliability and resiliency, including integration of renewable resources and improved system planning practices; determines effect of distributed energy resources on the system and recommends system modification

  • Performs advanced power system analyses and applies power system analysis proficiency in planning and operating studies including formulating a sound study approach, reaching logical conclusions, developing appropriate recommendations, and constructively reviewing the work of others, both internal and external to Central Hudson

  • Performs design work for various infrastructure including but not limited to electric substations and related facilities. Completes projects from start to finish, including cost estimates, Work Order Authorization, CARE approval, equipment and site technical specifications, bidding and selection process, equipment ordering/contractor selection, drawing mark-up, drawing completion by Drafting, wire-checking and transmittal and construction assistance. Upon project completion, approves as-built changes and files project and instruction books.

  • Interfaces with DER developers and customers, answers questions or concerns related to the interconnection process and/or applications

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the NYISO interconnection requirements, as well as internal Utility Interconnection process, and provides feedback and recommendations for updates

  • Oversees and supports documentation requirements, including reporting mandated by the Public Service Commission

  • Maintains effective working relationships with and is responsive to fellow employees, customers and all the Company’s external relationships

  • Represents Central Hudson in industry activities and organizations such as NYISO, EPRI, NYSRC, NPCC, etc.

  • Demonstrates improvement with each assignment and an ability to incorporate multiple unscheduled projects/assignments without negative impacts to previously assigned work/goals

  • Reports issues and recommendations in an objective, clear, and concise manner to peers, supervisors, and managers

  • Identifies and promotes innovative solutions to engineering problems and/or enhancements to existing processes; investigates planning methods and procedures of the electric utility industry

  • Provides support for storm restoration efforts

What does it take to be an Electrical Engineer?


  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering and at least 5 years of work experience in an engineering role

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and the ability to learn new computer software programs quickly

  • Flexibility to multitask and operate under pressure in a fast-paced work environment

  • Well-developed written/verbal communication skills

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, with innovation in mind

  • Strong analytical, organizational and quantitative skills

  • Must perform all tasks safely and design with safety in mind

  • Ability to voice opinions & lead discussions amongst industry groups

  • Valid driver’s license


  • Field of study in electrical engineering

  • Significant experience in the regulated Electric and/or Gas Utility industry; participation in utility industry/policy working groups

  • Experience working with NYISO (or any ISO) and knowledge of transmission planning & policy

  • Knowledge of and experience with New York state energy policy matters
