General Purpose

Provides legal support for Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE) management teams and human resources departments on all aspects of day-to-day employment-related matters, including hiring and termination issues, executive agreements, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, compensation, benefits, and employee investigations. Complete legal review for human resources vendor agreements.


  • Provide accurate and timely legal assessments, interpretations, recommendations, and representation to management and human resources teams on a wide range of legal issues involving federal, state, county, and municipal statutes and regulations related to the organization’s human capital.

  • Supports businesses in the review and response to employment claims, and inquiries from state and federal agencies on employee matters.

  • Drafts, maintains and revises benefit vendor contracts, separation agreements and other employment-related agreements.

  • Partners with human resources teams to establish corporate policies and legal controls that mitigate risk, and protect the company’s interests and objectives.

  • In conjunction with labor relations team, supports contract administration and negotiation of labor agreements to ensure alignment with company goals and objectives and assists with labor grievances, mediations and arbitrations.

  • Assists in the selection and acts as a liaison to outside counsel on employment and benefits matters, including litigation.

  • Proactively monitors ongoing legal issues and changes related to employment law and advises management and human resources departments on implications and courses of action for mitigating risks and promoting best practices.

  • Senior vice president & general counsel

  • Berkshire Hathaway Energy management

  • Human resources and legal personnel across Berkshire Hathaway Energy platforms.​​​​​

  • Perform responsibilities in support of the department's and the company's goals; perform responsibilities as directed within determined time frames and with a high degree of accuracy; establish and maintain effective work relationships within the department and the company; maintain the professional competence, knowledge and skills necessary to effectively complete responsibilities.

  • Recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services provided.

  • Develop accurate budgets based on departmental and business unit plans; control expenditures within budgeted levels to support those plans.

  • Prepare written status reports on accomplishments, outstanding issues and action plans.

  • Maintain sensitive and confidential company and employee information.

  • Support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules and customer satisfaction initiatives.

  • Monitors and enforces all compliance requirements for area of responsibility.


  • Law degree from an accredited law school.

  • Six years of legal experience is required. Experience in a regulated industry, regulatory agency or law firm setting is a plus.

  • Three to five years of employment law experience is required. Labor relations experience a plus.

  • Must be licensed to practice law in a jurisdiction the company does business in or qualify for in-house counsel admission requirements.

  • Demonstrates sound oral and written communication skills, sound judgment, and an ability to fulfill leadership responsibilities assigned; an ownership approach to projects and tasks is critical.

  • Effective analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills.

  • Ability to handle critical time constraints, priorities and meet established deadlines.

  • Available outside of normal working hours.

  • Willing to travel periodically for projects, hearings, litigation, negotiations, etc.

  • Must support BHE’s employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.

  • Demonstrated proficiency in the use and application of computer programs including spreadsheet, word processing, and e-mail programs.
