Staff Portfolio Analyst / Portfolio Analyst

We are adding to our Term Trading team at Portland General Electric. In this role, you will play a critical role in supporting the Term Traders perform analysis around trading the forward Gas and Power positions. You’ll be working with the market fundamentals group to analyze the impact of the power cost due to regional and national market drivers. You’ll identify the financial impact of different trades along with the qualitative and quantitative risks different hedging strategies present to serve PGE’s customers most economically. Performing analysis on data sets that may require scripts, codes, languages, etc. and performing modeling and communicating closely with traders, as well as external stakeholders.

Typical responsibilities include:

Portfolio Analytics:

Review the impact of trading strategy on the portfolio of the supply and demand for the purpose of serving PGE customers’ load. Assess the qualitative and quantitative risks difference that exists to the portfolio and make recommendation on hedging strategy. Analyze financial profit and loss data from trading activities and assess the impact on power costs. Ability to use third-party tools to enable trading.

Market modelling:

Maintains and enhances existing fundamental market models and help build out new primary trading models, including sub-models that support the primary trading models where applicable. Use moderate to advanced fundamental market analysis to inform portfolio strategy. Conducts regulatory research as necessary to support fundamental analysis and overall portfolio strategy.

Technical analysis:

Maintain and enhance pricing database, including the addition of new pricing data and the creation of technical charts and analysis. Use moderate to advanced technical analysis to inform portfolio strategy.

Portfolio analysis:

In the context of fundamental and technical analysis, originate portfolio trade recommendations that help identify new opportunities for trading. Collaborate, Communicate, Present, Prepare, and distribute market update communications and presentations to internal stakeholders which includes traders, management, and executives.

External Relations :

Under direction from Management, represent PGE in energy-related forums and meetings with other utilities and regulatory agencies to share/exchange information; work collaboratively with cross-functional teams in preparing, filing, and presenting regulatory filings as needed. Regulatory Compliance Leads, coordinates and supports PGE’s interactions with external enforcement agencies; contributes to PGE’s processes to demonstrate compliance and responses to audits; serves as company witness and subject matter expert in legal and rate-making testimony.

Our ideal candidate will be someone with:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, economics, finance, engineering, business and/or related field of study preferred. Equivalent experience within discipline also considered.

  • At the Analyst level, five or more years in the energy industry or a related field. At Staff Analyst level, two or more years in the energy industry or a related field. The position will be filled at the level commensurate with the successful candidate’s applicable skills and experience.

  • Experience in market trading and asset optimization.

  • Experience with northwest power portfolio preferred.

  • Advanced knowledge of the electric utility industry and electric energy markets, including trading, scheduling procedures, state and federal policies and regulations and underlying physical infrastructure and networks

  • Advanced knowledge of FERC regulatory and compliance requirements

  • Advanced statistical and numerical analysis skills

  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills in using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint) and analytics programs Advanced knowledge of programming languages such as VB/VBA, C, Perl, MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, Java, SQL and other analytical tools General Competencies
