The Business Development Consultant position plays a pivotal role and is charged with identifying, developing, and executing on growth opportunities within our service territory in collaboration with key strategic partners. The consultant’s primary responsibility will be to analyze market trends, identify potential business prospects, and develop strategies to expand the company’s presence in the commercial and industrial business sectors. Consultant proactively cultivates and updates a comprehensive understanding of current market trends and emerging technologies. Develops specialized industry knowledge in sectors that hold potential as customer prospects. Assumes the role of a subject matter expert, providing guidance to both employees and clients on various topics, including industry trends, pricing, Oregon's development landscape, and electric infrastructure and distribution.

The consultant will collaborate with key internal stakeholders spanning Planning, Operations, Engineering, Sales, Rates and Regulatory, and Transportation Electrification teams to name a few. This collaboration aims to ensure precise load growth forecasting and the timely delivery of project energization, and sale of product and services, all while addressing capacity constraints effectively.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Planning: Develops business and customer strategies to strengthen and support business development and create long-term economic value for PGE; proactively identifies potential business development opportunities and facilitate realization; provides expert knowledge of the economy and system planning. Apply theoretical knowledge of business and economic development principles and concepts. Lead business and investment attraction efforts by completing essential functions related to lead generation, site selection, business recruitment proposal development, market intelligence, and information gathering from public and private partners.

  • Develop and Maintain Business/Economic Opportunities: Build relationships and represent PGE and its corporate objectives with external partners and business and economic development organizations. Continually acquire professional skills through training and professional networking. Collaborate with internal and external teams on marketing and message development, related public policy development, and advocacy of customer and community needs related to business development projects. Deliver quarterly reports and executive leadership updates.

  • Relationship Management: Builds relationships with customers, potential customers and national, state, regional and local business and economic development partners and agencies; ensures economic development efforts are supportive of Company goals/interests; represents PGE as the sole company representative in client meetings and communications; develops strategic relationships with providers of new and emerging technologies related to PGE’s business interests.

  • Coordinate Business/Economic Development Projects/Initiatives: Delivers appropriate PGE talent, expertise and resources (typically officers, managers, professional staff brought together in unique, project-specific cross-functional teams) into key state and regional economic development projects and initiatives. Negotiates business transactions and contracts with multiple PGE parties to deliver products and services to customers, including, but not limited to, the development of term sheets and definitive agreements that affirm PGE’s plan of action with client, tailored to meet their needs. Represents PGE at Oregon/Washington/national trade shows; serves as PGE representative on regional economic development boards and other external organizations/committees; leads workgroups and committees.

  • Internal Team Operations : Oversees the accurate and timely development and production of complex reports, graphs, charts, maps, business correspondence, calendars and PowerPoint presentations to support responses to external economic development organizations, site selectors, client principals and companies targeted for strategic relationships by PGE

  • Understand PGE’s corporate values, internal processes and customers; seek industry market data to support Business Development strategic decisions; track and monitor targeted industrial sites and external relationships; share data using PGE data and GIS tools. Gather and coordinate information necessary for request for information (RFI) requests, demographic reports, regional overviews, industry cluster analyses and other customized analyses.

  • Analyze possible solutions and practices to support Business Development projects; monitor and track engagement with the State of Oregon (Business Oregon), Regional Economic Development organizations, site selectors, and other external partners. Oversee ongoing development of data infrastructure and repository. Track and processes data for storage and analysis. Produce and publish white papers, blog posts, and other content on economic data and insights

  • Support implementation of major Business Development marketing or construction projects. Activities include, but are not limited to, business system support, data management, organizational functions, budget tracking and support for studies, trade missions, trade shows and external partners events. Establish project planning documents, business case, budget, workflow and schedule. Create dashboards, interactive reports, and/or other data products; know dependencies, project roles and resource requirements; identifies project risks and mitigation strategies

  • Administrative activity includes maintaining, monitoring and updating project plans and Business Development pipeline report; tracking and updating department budget; communicating significant variances or project scope changes with the BD Team; maintaining and tracking project-related action items and issues.

  • Act as a liaison between Business Development and project team(s); provide guidance on behalf of Business Development. Coordinate meetings and documents action items; administers and instructs team(s) on SharePoint and/or other team collaboration tools

Education/Experience/Certifications

Education Requires a bachelor’s degree in business, marketing, management, economics or other related field or equivalent experience.

Experience Typically, five or more years in business/economic project or program development, real estate or commercial development, infrastructure development or related field.

Preferred Skills

  • Analytical: Ability to apply economics, data analysis, and research methods highly preferred. Understanding of geospatial statistics/analysis a plus.

  • Technology Oriented: Ability to quickly adopt new technologies and platforms, including research databases, data analysis packages/libraries, marketing software, and graphic design tools. Experience with relational databases, and the development of data infrastructure pipelines, processes, storage, etc. also desirable.

  • Project Management : Capable of effectively managing projects to deliver best-in-class services and results for PGE and the region. Ability to work independently and proactively.

  • Collaborative & Team-Oriented : Forward-thinking, creative and collaborative style. Able to initiate and support cross-collaboration among divisions within PGE to support programs and projects.

Compensation Range:

$87,225.00 - $173,875.00

Actual total compensation, including a performance based incentive bonus, is commensurate with experience, skills, qualifications, education, training, and internal equity. While we anticipate the selected candidate for this position will fall towards the middle or entry point of the compensation range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis.
