Portland General Electric Senior Manager/Manager Communications in Portland, Oregon

Key Responsibilities - Senior Manager:

Leads Proactive Communications Plans and team : Manages proactive communications team and agency partners responsible for planning, developing and implementing campaigns that support company strategic initiatives and positively influence perceptions of the company across a range of media. This includes traditional media (TV, print, radio), digital media, social media, and events, as well as partnering with the marketing team on communication initiatives through paid media and owned channels (web site, customer bills). Ensure efforts are aligned with corporate strategy, business objectives and executive guidelines; provides technical management for the team, ensuring that objectives are met and all relevant standards/procedures are followed; ensures that operational problems are identified and resolved; ensures that operational procedures and working practices are current and fit for the purpose; establishes strategy and metrics for functions overseen and monitors team performance to strategic goals; provides coaching and mentoring; manages to results; supports colleagues on employee engagement strategy.

Functional Leadership Demonstrates comprehensive functional and industry knowledge in specialized areas; identifies and resolves complex multidimensional business problems; exercises delegated authority over planning, direction and timely execution for a functional area or program; establishes and maintains contacts with management levels within and outside the company and at government agencies and with industry experts in accomplishing function or program objectives.

Financial Management Sets strategy and develops plans, policies and processes for the accounting, budgeting and, where applicable, charging of department resources and services, including the definition of cost models and charging models; sets, negotiates, approves and manages financial budgets and targets, ensuring that there is adequate funding for department objectives and plans.

Resourcing Oversees workforce planning and resource strategy, ensuring there is adequate skilled resource to meet established objectives and metrics; responsible for recruitment and talent development.

Professional Development Determines team development needs in line with business needs and strategic direction; generates development strategies to achieve required change; monitors progress and evaluates business benefits achieved.

Education/Experience/Certifications - Senior Manager

Requires a bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or other related field or equivalent experience.

Typically 10 or more years in communications or related field. Management experience preferred.

Key Responsibilities - Manager:

Manage Communications Team Manages a team of Communications staff responsible for planning, preparing and relaying information to PGE employees, the press and the wider community to ensure efforts are aligned with corporate strategy, business objectives and executive guidelines; provides technical management for the team, ensuring that objectives are met and all relevant standards/procedures are followed; ensures that operational problems are identified and resolved; ensures that operational procedures and working practices are current and fit for the purpose; establishes strategy and metrics for functions overseen and monitors team performance to strategic goals; provides coaching and mentoring; manages to results; develops and implements employee engagement strategy.

Develop and Execute Communications Strategy Develops internal/external communications strategy in alignment with PGE’s strategic direction, corporate priorities, brand identity, employee value proposition and other guiding principles and values; works with key stakeholders to develop and ensure consistent corporate messaging is used throughout the organization; ensures integration of companywide communications using a wide variety of print and digital channels; executes strategy to retain public trust with internal and external audiences.

Vendor Management Establishes relationships with vendors; determines overall strategy for insourcing and outsourcing work; sets vendor performance metrics; oversees monitoring of vendor performance; negotiates contracts with vendors and resolves issues.

Manage Communications Manages all communications on behalf of PGE; develops policies, procedures and guidelines; coordinates, develops and executes official company communications in alignment with business objectives; recommends and positions PGE officers’ involvement at external/internal conferences, meetings and events that support PGE’s strategic direction; coordinates the development of executive messages, speeches, presentations,letters and other communications; manages employee communications initiatives to enhance awareness and foster engagement; serves as designated spokesperson for the company.

Project Management and Consultation Provides project management support and/or communications consultation to PGE executives, departments and project teams; plans and executes corporate communication projects/initiatives to support and align with long-term plans and strategies; consults with PGE departments and project teams to assist in efforts to effectively identify and deploy communication resources to achieve project goals and objectives; oversees development and implementation of surveys and other feedback tools to support and achieve scorecard goals.

Financial Management Monitors and manages expenditures, ensuring that all financial targets are met, and examines any areas where budgets/expenditures vary from plan; assists with the definition and operation of effective financial controls and decision making.

Resourcing Oversees resourcing decisions and planning for team; partners with HR in the definition of jobs, recruitment, evaluation and selection processes.

Professional Development Reviews organizational development needs and training strategies to determine required learning and development outcomes for the team; provides guidance in the creation of development plans; monitors ongoing progress and provides coaching and mentoring and provides feedback; completes annual performance management reviews.

Education/Experience/Certifications - Manager:

Requires a bachelor’s degree in in journalism, communications, writing, marketing or other related field or equivalent experience.

Prefer eight or more years in communications, employee engagement, public or media relations or marketing or a related field.
