The Data Strategy & Management (DSM) bears critical responsibility on behalf of Portland General Electric (PGE) to create value for customers, regulators, and business operations through the collection, organization and interpretation of data from PGE’s expansive data portfolio. The mission of our team is to enable data driven decisions across the company and external stakeholders by ensuring secure, reliable and cataloged data access from our datalake and delivering insights utilizing advanced AI/ML approaches to support achieving PGE’s goal to provide energy that is safe, clean, reliable, affordable and secure.
We are looking for a Senior Data Scientist to join our team and drive our mission together. This individual will collaborate with the business partners to answer their business questions by using advanced data analysis techniques. They will work closely with the Information Architect, Data Architect, Data Engineer, and Business SME’s to design and develop ML solutions to cater business values and end-user experience. Through their work, they will lay foundation of best practices and framework that other scientists can follow.
The ideal candidate is proficient at manipulating and analyzing large datasets over multiple domains and skilled at using various machine learning and statistical techniques to create solutions realizing clear business values. They must also be experienced at productionizing ML solutions. They must be comfortable at designing programmatic solutions from ambiguity, and able to convey their idea clearly to stakeholders. They should be great communicators and presenters even to high-level executives. Last but not the least, they should share the same passion to make the world a great place to live by providing clean and reliable energy to people.
Determine overall data science standards, guidelines, best practices and approved modeling techniques.
Work with the business stakeholders to identify what the business requirements are and the expected outcome. Model and frame business scenarios that are meaningful and which impact on critical business processes and/or decisions.
Working cross functionally with business analysts, information architect, and data architect, identify what data is available and relevant, including internal and external data sources, leveraging new data collection processes such as smart meters and geo-location information or social media. Work with Data Engineers to support data collection, integration and retention requirements based on the input received.
Work in iterative processes with the business and validate findings. Expose the rationale of the findings in easy-to-understand terms.
Develop design of experiment to validate model result by comparing appropriate samples using statistical testing; A/B testing.
Demonstrate ability to employ the appropriate algorithm for various business problems.
Timely delivery of analysis. Due to the experimental approach to the problem, data scientists are at risk of over analyzing. Being able to define a "good enough" result is critical.
Develop data & analytics products that will help improve the ways in which we conduct business and increase operational efficiencies.
Establish metrics for tracking the business values from data science projects.

Education / Experience:
Requires a bachelor’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, economics or other related field or equivalent experience. MSc or PhD in mathematics, statistics or computer science or related field, such as physics, economics or operations research preferred.
Typically, eight or more years in data science or related field. Prototyping and implementation experience required. Three years of experience in data or statistical analysis, with mathematical and causal modeling skills.
Total experience of 5 or more years with vertical industry (utility background) is desired.
Machine learning knowledge is required.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills. The ability to communicate with the business to understand requirements and present back findings and recommendations by demonstrating the potential value to the organization.
Self-starter. The ability to come up with solutions to loosely defined business problems. He/she is expected to define the problem space based on industry or technological threats.
Extensive background in statistical analysis.
Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of R, Python.
Demonstrated implementation experience in different areas of machine learning.
Demonstrated knowledge in one or more platforms/technologies: AWS, Oracle, MS-SQL, Snowflake.
Familiar with Git, Docker, and container management technologies.
Mastery in oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain data concepts and technologies to business leaders, as well as business concepts to technologists.
Proven record of effective leadership, including the ability to balance team and individual responsibilities; building consensus; getting things done through others not directly under his/her supervision; working ethically and with integrity.
