Summary

​As an Electrical Design Plant Engineer, you will plan and implement the design, procurement, installation and/or maintenance of electrical systems and apparatus, such as electric motors, equipment controls, lighting, wiring, and power systems/devices and conductor systems for the generation, transmission, transformation and distribution of electric power.

You will also provide design improvements and engineering solutions to electrical problems at thermal, hydro, wind, solar plants or utility-scare battery facilities and maintain and improve the operation, reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of the company’s generating resources.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards

  • Maintains currency in state-of-the-art engineering practices and provides guidance and direction on engineering processes and standards to colleagues when requested.

  • Supports Compliance with extended professional knowledge of NERC/WECC Reliability Standards and NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection

  • Applies working knowledge of NEC and NESC for plant design, construction and support; applies working knowledge of power generation facilities for design and support

  • Applies IEEE standards for specification development, plant design and support

  • Provides technical guidance on plant designs, construction and support to other engineers and plant staffs.

Engineering Production

  • Prepares a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects; coordinates or manages project requiring multiple- discipline activity.

  • Develops and provides quality assurance reviews of engineering solutions that meet technical requirements, all applicable codes and regulatory requirements and follow sound engineering practice.

  • Analyzes and completes complex electrical designs and studies, providing data and recommendations on technical matters to management

  • Conducts arc-flash studies on low and medium voltage system, ensures compliance with arc-flash safety protocols and recommends improvements to mitigate or reduce arc-flash hazards

  • Manages complex electrical projects.

Project Coordination

  • Actively manages moderately complex electrical engineering projects, coordinates with internal/external team members, and represent the team to interdepartmental and external (regulatory) stakeholders.

  • Plans, develops, manages and coordinates projects with complex design, construction, operation, maintenance or testing elements in support of engineering and construction needs of hydro, wind or solar plants or utility-scale battery facilities.

  • Provides accurate capital budget and job estimates.

  • Demonstrates technical expertise and overall responsibility for the design, construction, and commissioning of electrical projects.

Knowledge Sharing

  • Serves as a technical specialist and provides consultation/guidance to project teams in a practice area

  • Actively fosters knowledge management and provides mentoring

  • Implements resource-management strategy.

Education/Experience/Certifications

Electrical Design Plant Engineer - P2 Intermediate Level

  • Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

  • Experience: Two or more years in related field.

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training: Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam strongly preferred.

  • Requires Valid Driver’s License

Senior Electrical Design Plant Engineer – P3 Career Level

  • Education: Requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from ABET-accredited engineering program or program accredited by an equivalent agency.

  • Experience: Five or more years in related field or 4 or more years in related field with PE license.

  • Certifications, Licenses and Training: Professional Engineering (PE) license strongly preferred.

  • Requires Valid Driver’s License

Preferred:

  • Experience in an electrical engineering role, typically in the electric power industry and a focus on electric power generation, balance of plant systems, electrical design, project management, operations engineering, control systems, and related fields.

  • Advanced knowledge of engineering and economic principles and concepts.

  • Advanced knowledge of other engineering disciplines and advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content as assigned.

  • Advanced understanding and application of engineering processes and procedures; working knowledge of other related departments and functions.

  • Advanced industry knowledge and technology trends.

  • Advanced knowledge of company QA/QC process and procedures.

  • Advanced knowledge of process and procedures for project controls and estimates.

  • Intermediate knowledge of the project management lifecycle (PMBOK)

  • Intermediate knowledge of construction feasibility.

  • Intermediate knowledge of procurement and contract administration

  • Intermediate knowledge of initiating electrical improvements and corrective actions for power plants, dams and related facilities.

  • Intermediate knowledge in the utility-scale battery, thermal, wind, solar and/or hydro generation areas; knowledge of substations preferred.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Driving/travel/commute:

  • Daily within service territory – Occasionally

  • Overnight inside / outside the service territory – Occasionally

  • Unstable surfaces requiring balance (i.e. moving equipment):

  • Walking distances and surfaces (long distances and over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces)
