In this job, you’ll be part of Test & Technology’s Relay/Automation Operations group within our Substation Construction and Maintenance (SC&M) organization. This position will play a key role in the execution of Substation infrastructure replacement and other specialty projects in Grid Resiliency and Modernization, that are essential for SCE’s delivery of safe, reliable, and clean power.As a Relay and Automation Specialist , you will help power our planet, reduce carbon emissions, and create cleaner air for everyone. A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!
Develop protective relay testing procedures, requiring collaboration with equipment and software vendors, various engineering departments, substation training and field Test Technicians.
Provide remote and onsite technical support, guidance and training associated with the applicable test methods for protective relays and Substation Automation Systems (SAS).
Ensure that system protection and automation assets are tested and maintained consistently and accurately (relays, substation automation assets, HMI’s, PLC’s, etc).
Support the SC&M organization with developing processes and procedures that promote, safety and efficiencies during capital projects deployment in order to meet project schedules.
Support SC&M Regulatory Compliance Group’s Protection System Maintenance Program to meet NERC compliance requirements.
Work in multi-functional teams including Asset Management Strategy & Engineering, Cybersecurity, IT, and with external vendors to develop solutions to emergent challenges and support long-term strategies.
Provide day-to-day technical support to SC&M's field Substation Test Technicians group, Test Contractors, and substation training on issues related to protective relays, substation automation, and control equipment.
Develop and mentor junior staff members in the group.
Five or more years of combined experience related to testing, commissioning, and or engineering of electric utility substation or distribution equipment.
Valid Driver’s license.
Bachelor’s degree or higher level of education in engineering or a related technical field.
Experience developing technical documentation.
Programming experience with any object-oriented programming language.
Knowledge of electric utility substation equipment and testing methods regarding medium and high voltage electric circuits.
Effective interpersonal skills, as well as good verbal and written communication/presentation skills.

Work Mode: When a return-to-office date has been determined, this position’s work mode is hybrid . The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.

Position will require up to 50% traveling and being out in the field throughout the SCE service territory.
This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
