About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 15 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview

The Reliability Engineer will work closely with the ASI Group. The Asset Strategy Integration (ASI) group is responsible for performing reliability studies, project managing substation infrastructure replacement (Sub IR) scoping, and integrating value engineering principals into standards and specifications. Reliability studies focus on analyzing asset replacement life-cycles, circuit performance, system configurations, and equipment data towards making recommendations on what assets and programs to make investments to improve reliability and resiliency.

The field of risk and reliability is an engineering specialty essential to maximizing the cost-effectiveness of SCE infrastructure investments. Reliability Strategy depends on the technical guidance of an experienced engineer knowledgeable in probabilistic risk assessment and reliability.

This position is for an Engineer 3 that is capable of providing technical vision, consulting, and oversight to the functions of the ASI group involving risk/reliability assessment, forecasting, and management.

Typical Responsibilities :

  • Provide technical guidance and direction in the area of risk and reliability assessment to work groups involved with distribution infrastructure replacement, substation infrastructure replacement, and transmission infrastructure replacement.

  • Assist in development of circuit reliability models (based on the CYME modeling software.)

  • Oversee the development and enhancement of time-dependent failure probability curves for all distribution and substation equipment (Weibull analyses).

  • Oversee the development and enhancement of the long-term distribution system reliability forecasting models.

  • Provide technical consulting to other T&D organizations in the area of risk and reliability assessment and management.

  • Manage project documentation necessary for use in supporting requests for project funding in the General Rate Case process and in SCE's one and ten-year budgeting processes

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or other related science major

  • Five years or more of engineering experience

  • Demonstrated experience inprobabilistic risk assessment and reliability engineering

Desired Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in engineering or equivalent

  • Knowledge of customer reliability metrics, i.e. SAIDI, SAIFI, and MAIFI.

  • Experience with risk-informed asset management, i.e. FMEA.

  • California P.E. License

  • Five or more years of electric utility experience.

  • Knowledge of distribution system apparatus and standards.

  • Knowledge of transmission system apparatus and standards.

  • Knowledge of Asset Management Standards, i.e. ISO 55000

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations to both technical and non-technical audiences.
