This position can be hired as either an Engineer III or Senior Engineer depending on experience

Job Summary

This position is for a Civil or Electrical Engineer in the Substation Engineering Department located in Plainfield, IN. The department is responsible for designing the physical layout for new substations, expansions to existing substations, upgrades, and failing equipment replacements that require engineering efforts to retrofit with the latest equipment. Substation Engineering is responsible for site grading, foundation design, structural design and analysis, and electrical analysis for grounding and lightning protection. We are a diverse group of civil engineers, electrical engineers, and designer/drafters that all work together to contribute to project success.

The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied.

The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions, and acts to resolve.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity

  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities

  • Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity

  • Conducts engineering and related studies

  • Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems

  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally

    Basic Qualifications

    Engineer III

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 4 years of minimum required related experience

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.

    Senior Engineer

  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program

  • 6 years minimum required related experience

  • Professional Engineer Certifications/License

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department.

  • Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles.

  • Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing, and presenting recommendations.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

Working Conditions

  • Corporate office environment

  • Occasional meetings occur within the substation environment

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to the posted Duke Energy facility. This position will also be expected to work in the office and perform field work.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
