Position Summary

The energy efficiency engineer will possess the engineering acumen and energy efficiency knowledge to interact with customers, customer engineers and vendors. This individual will educate customers on program requirements and processes, the identification of potential projects, the evaluation of data and measures, and the calculations required for the identified projects. This individual in this position will also work alongside other subject matter experts, product managers, segment managers and customer account executives to deliver and improve upon energy efficiency programs.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Interacts directly with customer account executives, vendors, and customers to assist them in developing viable, meaningful energy efficiency and other energy-related projects.

  • Educates customers and vendors on the energy efficiency program’s requirements and process.

  • Works with program team to evaluate customer submitted project proposals for adherence to program requirements and accuracy of estimated energy savings. Consistently applies program standards and evaluates custom projects by providing guidance to customers and/or vendors with determining data requirements and energy savings calculations. Must understand energy modeling software and be able to assist with complex energy savings calculations.

  • Assists in technical support of responses to program inquiries for regulatory filings, reporting and external stakeholder meetings.

  • Assists in the evaluation of program’s energy efficiency measures. Makes recommendations to program managers for adjustments to measures, rebates, and program policies and procedures.

  • Identifies opportunities to improve the customer experience with programs.

  • Stays abreast of technology developments and changes in customer preferences.

  • Provides engineering support for other Duke Energy regulated customer energy efficiency programs. Assists with analysis needed to make these programs more effective.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE

  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.

  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree

Desired Qualifications

  • 8+ years prior work-related experience

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret data related to the program/targeted customers which results in the implementation of program improvements

  • Experience in the Utility DSM industry and represent Duke Energy on technical boards and panels.

  • Ability to perform ASHRAE Level 2 or investment grade energy audits

  • Knowledge of corporation’s business objectives, strategies, products and services, pricing and markets

  • Prior experience working for an energy utility or services company.

  • Understanding of utility regulatory environment

  • Ability to represent the company and develop relationships with audiences on community, regional or national boards /committees; in community events or with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs)for use with media, public meetings, etc.

  • PE License, CEM and/or LC certification

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles

  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations,

  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Proficient in principles of project management

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
