The Manager – Risk Management - Insurance and Claims is a senior professional with deep knowledge and understanding of leading practices in managing corporate insurance program and claims activities. The successful candidate will lead and drive analysis and classification of enterprise risk exposures to maintain adequate insurance coverages. They will provide leadership, innovation and continuous improvement in the design and execution of insurance strategy and claims resolution processes. This role requires close interaction with business units and risk senior management as well as building and managing relationships with insurance brokers, underwriters, Cleco stakeholders and attorneys to negotiate insurance policies, settlements and litigation support. This position will also support broader risk management initiatives and departmental management responsibilities. This position reports to the VP, Risk Management and requires the management of people in the Insurance and Claims function.
Develops and designs strategies to appropriately transfer risk through the negotiation and purchase of various insurance products commensurate with existing and evolving risks at Cleco
Develops and manages relationships with domestic and international brokers and underwriters to drive successful insurance placements and renewals
Manages and mitigates the exposure resulting from 3rd party property and bodily injury claims and lawsuits
Proactively engages business units to perform insurance needs/risk analysis for business strategies and activities
Oversees and manages performance planning, development and coaching/mentoring of team members within the Insurance and Claims department, and broader risk management organization
Applies understanding of emerging practices in Insurance inclusive of new coverage and risk transfer products and managing self-insurance, where appropriate
Oversees and drives insurance policy renewals including the review/submission of applications and negotiates terms, conditions, premiums and deductibles to optimize Cleco’s insurance portfolio
Leads interactions with internal/external legal counsel in the defense of litigated claims
Communicates with internal stakeholders to manage insurance and claims risk mitigation action plans
Reviews non-standard company contracts for appropriate insurance and risk of loss mitigation
Identifies and integrates new technologies/current systems and analytical techniques to enhance/streamline policy renewals and claims processing and to provide additional insights to drive positive business impact
Supervises the development and maintenance of insurance and claims KPIs and performs risk analytics to help monitor and evaluate processes
Drives education of management and Board on various insurance programs and issues to promote effective risk management
Develops and maintains relationships in the utility and insurance sectors; actively participates in trade organizations and training
Manages operating budget for corporate insurance and claims activities
Strong business acumen with insurance and utility industry knowledge and in-depth understanding of legal and risk management
Strategic thinker with exceptional interpersonal skills who is successful at working collaboratively with various external and internal groups and executive management
Broad understanding of technical/legal documents and insurance contracts
Core knowledge of Insurance principles, theories and concepts with an understanding of domestic and international insurance markets
Excellent communication and negotiation skills to positively influence insurance renewals and claims/litigation resolutions

Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred

Minimum of 5 to 7+ years of experience in a leadership role
Litigation oversight/management preferred
