The Relay Technician plays a crucial role in maintaining and ensuring the reliability of electrical power systems.

  • Travel within Metropolitan area for projects. Company vehicle assigned at nearest SRP facility.

Experience

The following applies to technical Level III/Senior: Graduate of an approved Relay or Electrical Apprenticeship Program or equivalent.

Tech III: 4 years of experience or graduate of a Relay or Electrical Apprenticeship Program or equivalent.

Senior Technician: 7 years of related Relay Technician experience and meets expectations by a technical review panel.

Education

Completion of an appropriate Apprenticeship program or equivalent.

What You'll Do

Protection Automation & Control Construction:

  • Provides on-site project coordination creating schedules and communicating with project stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of protection system installations.

  • Responsible for coordination and outage scheduling for generation, transmission, distribution, and industrial customer projects.

  • Maintains quality assurance and quality control through reviewing and correcting protection and control engineering design prints

  • Responsible for installation strategy (panel construction, procurement, wire pull schedules, field wiring, etc.)

  • Performs installation quality assurance and quality control through field wiring checks and supporting with scheme checks

  • Must be available to work overtime to meet project milestones

  • Assists with RelayCommissioning & Testing responsibilities as assigned:​

  • Programs settings on microprocessor relays and other intelligent electronic devices

  • Commission and energizes protective relaying systems, telemetry devices, and other intelligent electronic devices through validation of wiring, settings, communication protocols and logic

  • Uses test equipment to simulate faults to validate protective relay systems

  • Assists with Protection Automation & Control Construction responsibilities as assigned.

What It Takes To Succeed

  • Knowledge of the principles of electrical and electronic theory

  • Knowledge of algebra, geometric, trigonometric and statistical concepts, techniques and procedures

  • Knowledge of personal computer operation and transient cyber assets

  • Knowledge of relay and test set applications

  • Knowledge and understanding of protective relay theory, principles and applications

  • Knowledge of commissioning, protective system testing and construction processes

  • Must be available to work overtime

  • Performs related work as required and/or assigned

  • Attends training programs, seminars, conferences, and meetings

  • Assists engineers and other personnel

  • Assists in directing other technicians, apprentices, and trades helpers
