Generation Long Range Forecast (LRF) Engineer III | Senior - applies in-depth technical, power plant knowledge and expertise to the development of complex, multi-disciplinary engineering, and construction projects for implementation under the Capital Projects program utilizing 3rd party engineering and construction services.

What your day would be like:

You are responsible for:

  • Project Development: Examines Generation system and component problems, determining if a capital project is needed to eliminate risk to Generation output, safety risk, environmental risk, etc. Determines schedule of project based off engineering, material lead time, and planned Generation unit outages.

  • Data Analysis: Analyzes system and component operating history and maintenance costs of system and component health problems. Calculates economic scores (net present value and benefit cost ratio) and presents plant priority so value of individual capital projects is understood.

  • Cost Estimation: Develops scope of work for capital projects, analyzes past project costs, internal cost database, and solicits budgetary costs from vendors to produce estimates for future capital projects

  • Project Validation: Reviews past capital projects, project change orders, and cost increases over the life of projects to produce lessons learned and better develop future capital projects

  • Collaboration: Works closely with project stakeholders including plant personnel, safety department personnel, environmental group personnel and engineering personnel to understand project requirements and reduce project change orders when the project is executed

  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously refining and improving the capital project forecasting process to lessen risk of Generation unit unavailability

  • Documentation: Documents individual capital project scope, cost, schedule, and justification through the Enterprise Project Management System, ensuring stakeholder buy-in and efficient execution by the capital projects team

  • Communication: Leads problem resolution meetings to accurately scope, estimate, justify, and schedule capital projects. Prepares project justification for presentation to senior management during yearly capital budgeting and forecast process. Presents project scores so capital projects can be prioritized appropriately and executed when needed.

Minimum Requirements

Generation Long Range Forecast (LRF) Engineer III

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution

  • PLUS five (5) years working experience in Engineering-related positions.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering discipline or related applied science discipline (see approved list) from an ABET accredited institution

  • PLUS eight (8) years working experience in Engineering-related positions.

    Approved degrees: Materials Science/Metallurgy, Physics, Chemistry, Math, Nuclear, Electrical, Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, Computer Science, Environmental, Chemical, Architectural, Structural. (A four-year bachelor of Engineering Technology degree is not considered an automatic equivalent for a B.S. degree in Engineering. A review of the degree program curriculum must be completed by Engineering department management.)

    Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Must possess comprehensive knowledge of energy analysis, engineering applications, business, and finance, working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, practices, and methods in an individual's engineering discipline.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Must have good understanding of construction, operating and engineering practices; safety rules and company policies.

Major Accountabilities

1) Present Engineering recommendations and drive decisions that have a moderate to high effect on the overall Generation performance.

2) Influence long term Generation goals and objectives through development of projects.

3) Provide engineering expertise in one or more areas, with a depth of knowledge in related field or a wide breadth of engineering knowledge in multiple fields.

4) Contacts internal customers and various levels of engineering and plant management to obtain or present technical data. Presents the results of designs, feasibility studies or varying alternatives to subordinates, colleagues, management, and customers in support of solving problems and driving decisions.

5) Define individual goals. Has capability to work within defined processes, solving problems with stakeholder engagement and minimal direction. Work is reviewed from a long-term perspective, to ensure alignment with organization strategic vision.

6) Establishes most effective solution to Generation problems. Sought out for solutions that are acted on as a final technical basis for problems identified by Generation plants.

7) Develops and applies technical solutions which require original and creative approaches. Provides unique solutions and applications to a broad range of technical problems.

8) Plans, coordinates, sets priorities, and applies resources to meet with applicable stakeholders and develop low to high complexity projects and/or processes.

7) Takes initiative to eliminate barriers and uses resources to ensure desired results.

8) Independently reviews complex-engineering analyses, prepares project scopes, specifications, cost estimates, evaluations, studies, technical reviews, investigations and verifications.

9) Prepares, checks and reviews non-standard analysis, evaluations, and investigations prepared by others.

10) Coordinates, administers, and provides technical direction to less experienced engineers and may research new developments and technologies, aligning the strategic vision of the company with planned future projects.

Flex Role:

This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from:

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.

  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.

    *Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
