Grid Operations Support Engineer

Provide technical and project management support for various Real-Time Bulk Electric System (BES) initiatives (e.g., new generation/ transmission resource integration, Operational Readiness, EIM Initiatives, & the implementation of enhanced control room software tools).
Collaborate with Real-time operations personnel to improve operating tools, enhance situational awareness and improve the reliability of the transmission system and Balancing Authority Area.
Provide oversight, development and integration support for various control room tool upgrades, including the Energy Management System (EMS) and the Operator Training Simulator (OTS).
Ensure compliance with NERC Standards by providing subject matter expertise during annual internal compliance review cycles, WECC O&P Audits, and with the development of internal controls.
Perform major system event investigations, including root cause analyses and, where needed, implement corrective action plans.
Prepare and conduct written and oral reports/presentations to various levels of SRP management and industry groups (e.g. EPRI, NATF, CIGRE, NASPI & others).
Develop, enhance and periodically review Operating Practices and other operational procedures.
Support the System Operator/Dispatcher training program by developing and delivering training.
Serve as SRP’s representative on industry committees and task forces, including EPRI, NATF, CIGRE, NASPI & others.
Identify, communicate, and implement operational excellence related improvements to system operation in collaboration with Grid Operations Supervisors and other key support groups.
Provide engineering support for real-time Balancing Authority/ EIM operations, including CAISO/ PCI application troubleshooting, event analysis support, and CIDI ticket resolutions.
Support, test, and deploy CAISO, PCI and other EIM software tool enhancements in collaboration with multiple internal support groups.
Provide project management and technical support to track, manage, and implement CAISO stakeholder initiatives and market enhancements. Collaborate with other current and future EIM participants (e.g. APS, NVE, TEP, WAPA), as needed.
Develop and deliver Balancing Authority and EIM operations training for new Balancing Authority operators/dispatchers.
Represent SRP in various EIM meetings and technical user groups, including EIM Joint Quarterly meetings, bi-weekly Operations meetings and the technical user group (TUG).
Provide technical and project management support for new EIM resource integration efforts, including compiling Generation Resource Data templates (GRDTs), supporting PCI under interface updates and developing/ revising PI ProcessBook displays.
Coordinate the onboarding of future EIM Market participants, including the implementation and testing of new Energy Transfer System Resources (ETSRs).
Coordinate and implement EIM business process improvements and market performance analytics.
Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum or State Professional Engineering Registration.
Five (5) years full time experience actively engaged in engineering practice. Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for the job of Senior Engineer.
Promotion to Level 2 requires a minimum of two years of experience at Level 1; demonstrated capability to perform advanced and more difficult work as determined by the supervisor. Promotion to Senior Level requires a minimum of three years of experience at Level 2; is fully competent in all aspects of functional area of assignment and as such would be recognized as a specialist in area of assignment and may have periodic or occasional lead responsibilities.
Periodic travel, flexible work hours and an ability to resolve conflicts under stress - consistent with project priorities.
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with an emphasis on solid presentation skills.
Excellent time management and organizational skills, ability to manage multiple responsibilities at one time.
Manage relationships with peers and other support groups to ensure departmental and project objectives are met in a timely manner.
Ability to work effectively with various organizations within SRP.
Ability to use engineering tools required for the job.
NERC Reliability Coordinator Certification may be required within two years after acquiring the position.
Knowledge with the following a plus:
Knowledge of electric utility systems and experience with electrical infrastructure, including a high level understanding of generation, transmission, and distribution systems.
Balancing Authority operations, Transmission System operations and the Energy Imbalance Market (EIM).
Reading, analyzing and interpreting technical specifications, electrical system schematics and other technical documentation with the ability to recognize and effectively communicate relevant information to non-technical audiences.
Organizing and writing accurate technical reports, procedural manuals and other technical documentation as well as preparing summary reports and management presentations.
Energy Management System (EMS) Applications including Power Flow, Real-Time Contingency Analysis (RTCA) and the Operator Training Simulator (OTS).
Control Room Tools: EMS/ SCADA, j5, iTOA OMS, PCI Gen Manager, Synchrowave Operations, Resiliency Management System, Pi Process Book, Pi Asset Framework and SRSG interfaces.
Certifications or Testing Required
Must possess the appropriate valid Arizona driver’s license.
