Summary

Director, New Construction | Power Generation: Responsible for leading the development of new complex, highly visible, multi-million-dollar generation construction projects such as developing a new facility or upgrading an existing one.

What your day would be like:

You are responsible for:

  • Develops the overall strategic vision and execution plan.

  • Implements strategies, initiatives and objectives to support the mission to provide reliable and cost-effective service to new and existing customers.

  • Plays a key leadership role in strategic business decision-making, problem solving, leadership development and performance management.

  • Travel to project sites will be necessary.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering, Project Management or other directly related field from an accredited college or university

  • PLUS ten (10) years of experience in engineering, construction management, project management, and/or other directly related fields.

  • In lieu of bachelors degree, combination of college coursework and/or experience in engineering, construction management, project management and/or other directly related fields equaling 14 years.

  • Five (5) years experience in supervisory/management positions.

    Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM) designation.

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

  • Risk Management Professional (RMP) certification.

  • Experience planning, executing, and managing large, complex, high impact projects.

  • Experience negotiating contracts.

  • Power plant operations and maintenance.

Major Accountabilities

1) Oversees all stages of planning, engineering, and construction to successfully execute large, complex, high impact projects in Generation for increasing power generation capacity.

  • Plans the scope and design of each project by: establishing performance metrics; developing budget and timeline; selecting best vendors; determining labor requirements; ensuring timely delivery of materials and equipment resources; and ensuring that objectives and standards are met cost effectively and on-time.

  • Identifies project risks and appropriate mitigation strategies and sees that those strategies are correctly implemented.

    2) Creates and reviews requests for information and requests for proposal.

  • Selects the most efficient and cost-effective vendors for each project.

  • Negotiates and reviews contracts.

  • Performs as necessary any change order estimating and negotiations.

    3) Manages the relationship with general contractors and vendors to ensure the design, construction, and project meets objectives, deadlines and are within budget.

  • Establishes and negotiates schedules for contractors and subcontractors.

  • Finds solutions to problems as they arise.

  • Ensures contractors and vendors meet performance metrics, standards and good engineering practices.

  • Documents and provides status updates and progress reports for upper management.

    4) Reviews the closing of each project to ensure construction meets project specifications, industry standards and complies with state, federal and local regulations.

  • Interfaces with city, county and governmental regulators, reviewers and inspectors as appropriate.

    5) Selects and develops a high performing team through effective coaching, performance management and feedback, rewards and recognition, and training and development opportunities.

    6) Full authority for the development and management of the department and project budgets.

  • Tracks and reports project costs and adherence to project estimates.

  • Initiates actions in cases of deviations.

Flex Role:

This position is not required to be performed at a specific APS facility as long as adequate technology and a solid ergonomic set up are present. Pending agreement with leadership, employees hired into this role will be able to choose where they prefer to perform their work. Employees will have two options to choose from:

  • APS office based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from an APS facility.

  • Home based: The employee prefers to work most of the time from his/her home.

*Employees in Flex roles are required to reside in Arizona (or NM for Four Corners-based employees). Role types are subject to change based on business need.
