Occupational Health Nurse - 18-Month Part-time Contract with Benefits

We are seeking a part-time Occupational Health Nurse in our Peterborough, Ontario location to work 3 days a week (24 hours a week).

About our Role:

The Occupational Health Nurse is responsible for the implementation and delivery of the Occupational Health programs. The Occupational Health Nurse develops practical and innovative ways to identify and meet goals. This role is responsible for work that is less defined in scope, and will utilize understanding and experience to execute business objectives, and has the ability to effect short-term and some long-term business goals. Reporting to the HR Director, this role communicates with a wide range of functions including management, senior management, EHS and both union and non-union employees. This role supports all BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. sites: Peterborough, Toronto, Arnprior.


  • Manage all aspects of established Medical Surveillance Programs which would include Pulmonary Function Screening Tests, Vision Screenings and other Occupational based health assessments.

  • Facilitate coordination of disability management claims and return to work programs including STD, LTD, WSIB and Return to Work programs; this includes management of medical information for self-insured STD claims for non-union group, and collaboration with third party insurance provider for unionized groups.

  • Administer and advise on health and safety initiatives including administering immunization programs.

  • Ongoing collaboration with Environmental Health and Safety Team, Human Resources Department Management, Medical Consultant, Disability Administrator and WSIB.

  • Ensure legislative compliance of occupational programs and may be required to update policies and procedures.

  • Participate in ongoing continuing education experiences as required by the Occupational Health Nurse specialty.

  • Responsible for personal safety and the safety of those around you within the scope of the position.

  • Provide support to management and human resources for COVID-19 in relation to company practices, policies and day-to-day operations.

  • Provide support to onsite Emergency Response Teams and respond to medical and first aid events when onsite.

  • Occasional travel may be required to the Toronto site (monthly) with Peterborough site as a home base.

    Knowledge and Experience:

  • Must be either a Registered Nurse (RN) or Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) in good standing with the CNO with a minimum of 1-2 years of Occupational Health experience preferred.

  • Post graduate Occupational Health Nurse Diploma or courses towards completion of Diploma preferred.

  • Membership with Ontario Occupational Health Nurses Association and Personal Liability Insurance program.

  • Understanding and adherence to Canadian privacy laws pertaining to health records (PHIPA), and the ability to handle work with sensitive issues while protecting the confidentiality of medical information.

  • Familiar with the Canada Labour Code, Human Rights Code, WSIA and the Radiation Protection Act.

  • Experience in developing, administering, reviewing and coordination of policies, procedures and programs.

  • Experience with the administration and use of online electronic medical records.

  • Experience applying a research approach to clinical problem solving; review relevant literature/sources and apply findings within established procedures or in collaboration with others.

  • Proven ability to make decisions and autonomously manage workload in a fast-paced work environment.

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and critical thinking skills.

  • Certified Occupational Health Nurse designation, COHN (C), an asset.

  • Experience with Cority is an asset.

  • Experience in a unionized environment is an asset.
