Position Summary

Multiple Florida locations

This is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. This entry level position is a new role within Duke Energy’s Florida Distribution organization’s Engineering Rotation Program.

The new program is designed to prepare engineers for a successful career in the electric utility industry and build the future leaders of Duke Energy. The successful candidates will enter a three year rotational program that educates the engineers on every aspect of the Distribution operating model by placing the engineers in multi-month assignments in each department. Throughout these assignments, the engineer will design customer requested projects; analyze power quality and reliability problems; install, construction and maintain distribution facilities in the field; manage the distribution grid; and plan system expansions and upgrades. In each rotation a mentor will be paired with the engineer to provide guidance, tasks, assistance and assessment.

With the successful completion of the program, the engineer is guaranteed to be placed in a permanent, fulltime position within Duke Energy’s Florida Distribution organization. This position does require travel within the state of Florida.


  • Learn and practice a “Safety First” attitude incorporating company safety rules and policies in all aspects of daily work.

  • Be customer focused and possess a comfort working with customers on a daily basis.

  • Work in the field with Construction & Maintenance crews fulltime for multiple months during the Rotation Program. This includes working in all forms of Florida’s ever changing weather.

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems in area of expertise.

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.

  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches.

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, engineering and professional knowledge, skills and performance.

  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.

  • Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Maintain a flexible, open attitude in each of the assignments.

Basic/Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.

  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.

  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

  • Possesses a valid driver's license.

Desired Qualifications

  • Recent graduate from four-year program.

  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.

  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Reliable transportation.

  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
