Substation Electrician 3/C (UIE-CT-Operations)(36686)

Responsibilities

  • Assist substation electricians through following instructions under the direction of higher class electricians and perform a variety of routine duties according to previous experience on similar or related work.

  • Assist higher class electricians in performing all aspects of transmission & distribution and substation operations, maintenance, construction & installation.

  • Ability to manufacture small parts necessary for repairs.

  • Qualified as safety observer of others.

  • Understand and use heavy construction equipment.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

Skills and Requirements

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age and a high school graduate or equivalent, preferably with

  • additional technical training and mechanical aptitude.

  • Must pass CAST Test

  • Must have a valid drivers' license, with a safe driving record

  • Must obtain and maintain valid Commercial Class "A" Driver's license

  • Is subject to the Company's random drug and alcohol testing policy

  • Must be available for storm and emergency assignments and to work extended duration with short notice

  • Ability to perform work in all types of weather (hot/cold) 24/7, 365 days.

  • Must continuously work within company safety policies and procedures

  • Must be capable of performing all the essential job functions in the classification

  • Must successfully complete ongoing skill assessments within the Substation TMP Program

  • Capable of working at heights, use of bucket trucks/manlifts, and use of ladders

  • Must obtain and maintain First Aid & CPR Certifications

  • Must be able to refer to and interpret drawings, sketches, written instructions, and work orders

  • Must be able to use measuring tools, mobile data terminal and testing instruments

  • Some judgement is required to interpret and carry out instructions under minimum supervision

  • Care and dependability to perform job duties efficiently

  • Aware of day-to-day activity of Hazardous waste management system and oil spill cleanup procedures

  • Requires Heavy lifting and ergonomic awareness (50lbs/+)

Education & Experience

Education:

• Requires, as a minimum, a current State of Connecticut Electrical Journey person E-2 license or Associate's Degree in Electrical or Electronic related field.

• The E-2 license must be maintained.

• Requires the use of advanced trades’ mathematics together with the use of diagrams, electrical maps, schematics and construction drawings, drawings, and charts.

• Calculate and apply electric formulas.

• Use a variety of measuring and testing instruments, knowledge of National Electrical Code and National Electric Safety Codes.

• Use mobile data terminals and instruments.

• Must have and maintain a valid Connecticut driver’s license, must obtain and maintain a CT CDL.

Experience:

• Six to twelve months experience in substation electrical work performance.

• Involved in the work performance associated with substation equipment, maintenance, operations, construction and installation, and troubleshooting of wide range of substation equipment and associated controls.

Working Conditions

  • Good working conditions.

  • Some exposure to cold when working outside with occasional exposure to oil, chemicals, dust and dirt.

  • Able to work inside underground network lines (holes, vaults, etc.)

  • Able to work from heights.

Physical Demand

  • Able to wear a respirator when needed.

  • Light physical demand.

  • Rare lifting up to 60 pounds sometimes in difficult positions while installing or building new installations.

  • This can involve climbing, pulling of wire, rigging large pieces of equipment, bending and installing pipe and work that is related to the building and removal of substation, transmission and customer equipment.
