Omaha Public Power District Engineer I, II, III, Senior, and Lead Engineer - Power Quality in Omaha, Nebraska

OPPD is seeking a talented and experienced Lead Engineer - Power Quality to join our dynamic team. As the Lead Engineer, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our power distribution systems by overseeing and optimizing power quality. This position requires a deep understanding of power systems, electrical engineering principles, and the ability to lead and collaborate with cross-functional teams.

The Lead Power Quality Engineer is responsible for monitoring, analyzing, and improving power quality, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards, and implementing corrective action plans when necessary. Additionally, you will work with Line Maintenance Technicians and collaborate with various departments to optimize power distribution systems and resolve customer power quality issues. Utilize expertise in circuit performance and analytics to identify and resolve complex power quality problems.

  1. Lead, support and provide power quality programs, solutions, monitoring, and investigations for the distribution system, equipment, and issues to ensure customer satisfaction and regulatory requirements.

¿ Lead, support, coordinate or perform research, investigation, and evaluation activities as assigned by the department Manager.

¿ Promote and support consistency, consolidation, accuracy and organization in department recordkeeping.

¿ Lead power quality assessments and investigations to identify and resolve issues.

¿ Overall responsibility to ensure the contact, investigation, and resolution to customer power quality issues.

¿ Monitor and analyze data from power quality monitoring equipment to identify trends, anomalies, disturbances, and potential causes of power quality issues.

¿ Develop and implement strategies to minimize power quality issues, such as harmonics, voltage fluctuations, and power factor imbalances.

¿ Coordinate and provide technical guidance / support to field technicians during troubleshooting and resolution of power quality issues and to internal teams and external stakeholders on power quality matters.

¿ Conduct power quality assessments and audits to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations and propose innovative solutions for improvement.

¿ Develop and deliver training programs to enhance awareness and understanding of power quality issues among employees and customers.

¿ Manage distribution circuit improvement and power quality programs including project scoping, budgets, and advocating for work to be completed.

¿ Responsible for monitoring, tracking, communicating, and analyzing distribution circuit health & performance using advanced analytical techniques.

  1. Assist manager with the day-to-day coaching, feedback, reporting, performance evaluation and assignment of work priorities/workloads for team members. (As Assigned By Manager; 40% or less of role)

¿ In collaboration with the Manager, evaluate workloads and priorities and assign appropriate resources to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of departmental products and services.

¿ Assist with the resolution of escalated issues, questions and work stoppage situations.

¿ Monitor, coach and recommend additional training solutions for team members to develop the skills, knowledge and experience to be effective in role.

¿ Perform routine quality checks on job functions/individual outputs in area. Report findings to management regularly.

¿ Maintain a detailed Subject Matter Expert with regard to the work and roles of the team. Assist in the training of new staff and cross training of existing staff. (As Assigned by Manager)

¿ Provide input to the development of performance management documentation.

¿ Encourage innovation and creativity in design, project execution and cross functional collaboration.

¿ Participate in the selection, monitoring, and development of the department¿s coop students and coop program

Qualifications

This role will be filled commensurate on experience at the applicable Engineer Level (Engineer I through Lead Engineer) based on the candidate¿s knowledge and experience.

Required:

¿ ABET accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering field.

¿ Minimum of 5 years of equivalent engineering work experience. Master's degree may be considered for up to two years of experience.

¿ Professional Engineer (PE) certificate

¿ In-depth knowledge of utility power systems, including voltage regulation, harmonics, flicker, and voltage sags/swells, power quality standards, and industry best practices.

¿ Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex power quality issues and develop effective solutions.

¿ Demonstrated capabilities of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and presenting recommendations.

¿ Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide technical solutions to customer issues.

¿ Demonstrated broad prospective across multiple engineering disciplines and a thorough industry knowledge.

¿ Demonstrated perspective combining both technical and business attributes.

¿ Demonstrated bias for action taking with a proactive response anticipating challenges.

¿ Demonstrated capability to lead, motivate, and develop technical team members including the ability to encourage diverse ideas and concepts and effectively deal with conflict.

¿ Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, exercise flexibility and take responsibility for assigned work.

¿ Ability to organize, prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously with frequent changing priorities.

¿ Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional and respectful manner.

¿ Advanced MS Office Professional Skills (Word, Power Point, Outlook, and Excel)

¿ A valid driver¿s license.

Desired:

¿ Professional certification related to power quality.

¿ Proficiency with power quality analysis software (e.g., ETAP, PSCAD, EMTP-RV, Pro Vision) and power quality monitoring equipment.

¿ Advanced degree in engineering, business, or computer science is desirable.

¿ Demonstrated knowledge and application of analytics software & tools such as Power BI, Python, Tableau, R, Machine Learning, pivot tables, live data links, data parsing, OLE, SQL.

¿ Strong working knowledge of OPPD work processes and computer systems.

¿ Thorough knowledge of OPPD¿s transmission, distribution, and substation systems.

¿ Familiarity and experience with Asset Suite, Cognos, PeopleSoft, and SharePoint.
