Position Summary

TELECOMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN II

Telecommunications Technicians II are responsible for the operation and maintenance of communications equipment and networks owned and/or operated by AES Ohio. These systems are critical to T&D, and maintenance and repair of these systems will be completed as required in support of these operations.

Qualifications

Entry Level

Track 1

Must meet fully qualified Telecommunications Technician I with 1 year time in grade and pass test for advancement into Technician II.

Track 2

Highly qualified candidates who

· Possess a two-year technical degree in electronics engineering or computer sciences

· Or have a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, working on current relevant telecommunications technologies in the areas of fiber, and wireless data communications.

Preferred experience will be in the areas of

  • Fusion fiber splicing

  • External fiber plant installation

  • Data radio installation and troubleshooting

· Coaxial connector and grounding installation

· Experience with RF spectrum analyzer

· Serial and Ethernet data communications testing and troubleshooting

Candidates must also pass the Technician I test.

Fully Qualified

A minimum of three years’ experience as a Telecommunications Technician II. Must have demonstrated the ability to perform all technical work, have demonstrated a thorough knowledge of telecommunication theory in general and the ability to perform high quality manual work.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

General

Under directive or general supervision:

Installs and maintains radios, microwave equipment, cable, data systems, telephone and associated equipment, and any related duties that may be required. Performs work on live telecommunication circuits when required and performs such work in a manner that minimizes disruption to user traffic when possible. Uses test equipment properly to isolate problems in telecommunication systems. Assumes responsibility for on-the-job training of lesser skilled or employees of a lower classification. Must have demonstrated ability and is willing to do lesser skilled jobs as required.

Radio Duties

Program Harris mobile and portable radios, for net new and move/add/change. Troubleshoots and repairs mobile radios installed in vehicles, portable radios, Harris network base stations, Install, troubleshoot, and repair master and remote MAS radios. Install troubleshoot and repair point to point unlicensed radio links.

Data Network Duties

Install, troubleshoot, and repair data network interface/termination equipment including, protocol converters, patch panel, optic star, CSU/DSU modems etc. Install configure and trouble shoot VOIP phone circuits Makes changes to phone and voicemail features at the phone set level. Install troubleshoot and repair voice recorder systems. Install LAN connections from wiring closet electronics to end equipment. Install and repair AC and DC low voltage power and UPS systems. Extend special service circuits from demarcation to end equipment. Perform fiber splicing in compliance with accepted safety practices and standards. Including ADSS/ADSS, OPGW/ADSS and patch panel termination. Perform moves, adds and physical changes to cable, telephony, data circuits.

Expanded Role

MPLS.

· Access routers and verify Cpipe, SAP and port configurations/assignments.

· Work with Senior Technician to troubleshoot MPLS router configuration issues.

Distribution Automation

· Utilize PCTEL analyzer to verify AT&T commercial and FirstNet network coverage or identify and document ATT network issues.

· Complete end to end testing from RV55 to Distribution EMS to verify network continuity for DSCADA

· Troubleshoot interface from RV55 to DSCADA edge device to identify/document problems with the end equipment.
