Lewis Tree Service, Inc Safety Supervisor in Ohio

Description

The Lewis Tree Safety and Human Performance Team fosters a culture that promotes learning, innovation, and prioritizing safety work based on serious injury potential risks. We partner with Operations to support and deliver value to our workers. The Safety Supervisor is responsible for leading Safety Specialists and working with the Safety and Human Performance Leaders to develop and implement strategies, programs, and practices to create safety. Approximately 60% travel, mostly field visits with Safety Specialists, Operations Leadership, and crews.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead Safety Specialists who support operations teams.

  • Recruit and hire safety specialists who enjoy learning, have a passion to help crews, and an ambition to grow.

  • Recognizing that diversity is a strength, provide opportunities for each team member to uniquely contribute.

  • Develop Safety Specialists to embody the values and actions of safety team leadership stand:

  • Spend most of their time in the field with crews and field leadership.

  • Hold commitments; do what we say we will do unless there are extenuating circumstances.

  • Foster a relationship of trust, transparency, and openness within the Safety Team and with Operations; encourage reporting close calls and incidents.

  • Keep a finger on the pulse and an ear to the ground in regions/areas supported to address early signals of developing risks.

  • Act with an urgency that matches level of risk/severity and be transparent in sharing information when incidents, close calls, or problems occur.

  • Coordinate and/or lead investigating and analyzing events to surface the “deeper story” and system gaps.

  • Navigate sensitive situations and support the Safety Team and Operations Leaders to shift culture away from blame and toward learning.

  • Manage Safety Specialist administrative work (approve expense reports and time off, manage vehicles, etc.)

  • Facilitate Learning Teams, conduct training, and hold workshops.

  • Coordinate safety coverage and engage to manage emergent risks.

  • Support cross-region sharing, facilitate regions working together toward common goals, offer help to each other and to other regions.

  • Provide performance feedback, reward accomplishments, and address poor performance.

  • Manage safety and human performance related programs.

  • Influence change.

  • Lead implementing strategy based on current safety science (Safety II, Resilience Engineering, “Safety Differently,” “New View”).

  • Influence and guide executives, leaders, safety team, and crews in shifting perspectives to new view safety philosophies and on understanding and applying safety and human performance theories, tools, and practices.

  • Lead conversations with customers to share how Lewis is implementing new view safety.

  • Network with thought leaders redefining safety (Safety II, Resilience Engineering, “Safety Differently”, “New View”).

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience.

  • 5 years minimum experience in Safety and/or Human Performance.

  • Experience in line clearance or related industry is preferred.

  • Experience in a management or leadership position is preferred.

  • Valid driver’s license.

    COMPETENT IN THESE AREAS:

  • Leading teams and change.

  • Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.

  • Vegetation management tools, practices, and procedures is a plus.

  • OSHA, ANSI, DOT and tree industry regulations and standards.

  • Computer and Microsoft products.
