The Manager of Government Affairs is responsible for overseeing the Government Affairs relationships, and consultants for AES Ohio. They interface regularly on behalf of the company with local, state, and federal officials. The Manager advocates on behalf of AES Ohio for key strategic and operational policy issues concerning all aspects of the business. Serve as the administrator and board member for the AES Ohio PAC.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Build and maintain relationships on behalf of AES Ohio with key stakeholders, including state and local officials, key staff in the legislature, administration and other statewide office holders, trade associations, and NGOs who can affect/influence the company’s issues.

  • Monitor and track proposed legislation and ballot measures (local, state, and federal), analyze proposed legislative, administrative and ballot measure actions in assigned markets, assess the potential impact on the company and formulate appropriate responses.

  • Organizes and directs strategies and programs to represent the organization in matters involving federal, state, and local governments.

  • Executes policy direction and leads efforts to lobby and promote AES Ohio’s point of view to legislators, state and local government officials, community organizations, and other key stakeholders.

  • Coordinates and maintains internal programs to ensure the organization's awareness of federal, state, local, community and key stakeholder issues that affect its activities.

  • Assists with the establishment and maintenance of effective working relationships with economic development and government officials, and other key stakeholders and utilize these relationships to develop new business opportunities

  • Participates in the Ohio Electric Utility Institute (OEUI) taking a leadership role in industry policy development. May serve on other OEUI roles as determined by VP, US Utilities.

  • Manage the AES Ohio PAC. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and internal rules. Build membership and recommend annual political giving goals. Represent the company at community and other events

  • Direct contract lobbyists and consultants to assist the company’s efforts.

Qualifications:

  • College degree in a related field. Advanced degree not required. Law degree is a plus, but not required.

  • 5-7 years of related work experience.

  • Experience in the energy sector or related utilities services preferred

  • Strong skills in understanding the legislative process, how the executive branch functions, and the role of state agencies.

  • Exceptional analytical skills in understanding policy impacts on energy development and pricing.

  • Natural decision-maker, able to exercise judgment and take ownership of the consequences of actions and decisions.

  • Strong negotiation and influencing skills.

  • Ability to build long-term and positive relationships. Ability to network across the organization and externally.

  • Communication skills; ability to develop and deliver concise, powerful messages verbally, in writing, and in presentations.

  • Unwavering ethics and strong moral compass in all transactions
