Department Overview

The Digital Workplace (DW) team, part of the Infrastructure and Cloud Services organization, helps enable joy at work for our coworkers through the delivery of devices, reliability of collaboration platforms, and speed of response within our support services.  Collaboration Experience, situated within Digital Workplace, is dedicated to providing and maintaining end-user technologies and capabilities to deliver a best-in-class user experience.  We specialize in collaboration services, productivity tools, virtual desktop environments, Windows lifecycle management, and application packaging. Additionally, we offer comprehensive third tier support, encompassing product vision, strategy, and management.

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced AVD/Windows 365 Solutions Engineer, Senior, with a strong background architecting services such as Azure Virtual Desktop and/or Windows 365. This position will be based in Oakland, CA or open to a flexible location and will report to the Virtual Desktop Experience Supervisor. The AVD/Windows 365 Solutions Engineer will be involved in designing, delivering, and supporting a technical solution for Azure Virtual Desktop & Windows 365 technologies. This role requires someone who has expertise in setting up, configuring, deploying, and supporting this technology throughout the enterprise. We are embarking on a large cloud migration, increased automation and delivering a modern virtual desktop. This is achieved by working with the current team to develop a strong understanding of our current on-premise VDI environment which is currently serving over 4500+ end users. This position will participate in team’s troubleshooting sessions as well as an on-call rotation schedule. The successful candidate needs to have a blend of technical expertise, strong communication, analytical, customer facing skills and building partnerships inside and outside the IT organization.

This position is hybrid, working from your remote office and your assigned work location once a month and/or based on business need. The assigned work location will be within the PG&E Service Territory and will be agreed upon by the successful candidate and hiring leader.

PG&E is providing the salary range that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation range is specific to the locality of the job. The actual salary paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity. Although we estimate the successful candidate hired into this role will be placed between the entry point and the middle of the range, the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis related to these factors.​ This job is also eligible to participate in PG&E’s discretionary incentive compensation programs.

A reasonable salary range is:​

Bay Area Minimum: $114,000

Bay Area Maximum: $182,000


California Minimum:$108,000

California Maximum:$173,000

Job Responsibilities

  • Accountable and responsible for the design, configuration, delivery of the AVD/Windows 365 solutions to provide a cloud virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for the organization.

  • Assess requirements, recommend, and build images for the AVD/Windows 365 personas to meet business needs with cost controls.

  • Utilizes broad portfolio-building approach, subject matter expertise and communication skills to create and present innovative solutions based on requirements.

  • Ensure seamless integration of AVD/Windows 365 with existing systems, applications, and infrastructure.

  • Implement security measures and compliance standards to protect AVD/Windows 365 environments and data.

  • Develop and implement tools, scripts and frameworks of moderate complexity that drive efficiency in automation and management of the AVD/Windows 365 environments.

  • Collaborate with stakeholders to define and implement AVD/Windows 365 governance policies, procedures, and service level agreements (SLA).

  • Provide technical support, guidance, and knowledge transfer to IT teams on AVD/Windows 365 deployment configurations and best practices.

  • Applies broad knowledge of IT standards, service offerings and operational options to develop operational procedures, standards, RACI, and user onboarding documentation to support the AVD/Windows 365 environment at scale.

  • Serves as AVD/Windows 365 technical advocate and is the voice for IT operations on the implementation strategy designed to address client business problems. Troubleshoot issues related to the implementation, performance, and integration.

  • Maintain vendor relationships to ensure technical performance requirements, responsible for the product’s license compliance and partnering with projects on requests for new product contracts and licenses.

  • Stay up to date with AVD/Windows 365 updates, new features, and industry trends and collaborate with coworkers to understand optimizations and feature releases that will enhance the user experience for the AVD/Windows 365 environments.

  • Collaborate with other domain specific (application, infrastructure, and/or Cyber security) Engineers, Architects and Product Specialists technologists to complete IT deliverables; products and components work together to meet the objectives; and performance goals as defined in the requirements. Identify solution design gaps in existing and proposed architectures and recommend changes or enhancements.

  • Generates or assists business in generation of Project Concept estimates and refinement of early-phase project estimates which contribute to the business case, and implementation level design.

  • Partner with Digital Workplace Technology Architect to develop, and maintain technical standards, design patterns, reference architectures and roadmaps for a logical collection of foundational services.

  • Partner with Digital Workplace Technology Architect in the health evaluation of the AVD/Windows 365 technology and assists in the development of improvement plans.

  • Participate in team’s troubleshooting sessions as well as an on-call rotation schedule.

  • Able to engage and influence partners to develop the best solutions

  • Actively identify, solve, and implement performance and process improvements at the Digital Workplace organization level

  • Presents findings and makes recommendations to management or others within organization

  • Provides critical support function for the implementations during plan, analyze, design, build, test, and deploy phases of IT projects

  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science or job-related discipline or equivalent experience

  • Experience in enterprise architecture environments, job-related

  • Experience in IT-Information Technology engineering design, 5 years


  • Cloud Technologies: Microsoft Intune, Microsoft 365 services, Entra ID (Azure AD), Software as a Service (SaaS), Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop (Cloud certifications are preferred)

  • Microsoft:

  • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and WINS, Group Policy, Printing, Exchange, Terminal server, PowerShell, Remote access technology, Windows Operating System, Microsoft Edge

  • Technical proficiency (Expert level) - Laptops, desktops, workstations, thin clients, and mobile devices.

  • Strong scripting experience

  • Experience of Agile Working and ITIL

  • Experience in project management

  • Experience of producing solution designs and documentation suitable for operational hand over

  • Experience with regulations such as NERC CIP
