This position is accountable for management of the company's external corporate communications, including issues management, media relations, crisis communications, customer communications, executive communications, Enbridge Gas brand, social media, the company's websites, and digital/social media platforms and lead a team of seven direct reports. Functional leader for two additional direct reports at East Ohio Gas.

What you will do:

External Communications :

  • Identify emerging issues that may impact the company’s reputation and assist internal clients to develop proactive communication strategies to protect the company brand and reputation. Includes developing positions, media strategy & briefing notes on diverse issues.

  • Develop and execute communication programs to position Enbridge Gas to achieve public support for critical business initiatives, to ensure successful outcomes (e.g. large expansion projects/regulatory issues/operational Issues/DSM initiatives, new lines of business etc.)

  • Develop and execute communication programs to advocate for the role of natural gas, the Enbridge Gas distribution system, and related low-carbon initiatives as a critical component of Ontario’s energy mix.

Media Relations

  • Act as company spokesperson and respond to media request for information.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with major media outlets (ie: Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, trade media ie: Platts) to shape & influence media coverage and in many cases mitigate any negative press due to incidents or issues.

  • Lead development of Enbridge Gas’ media and social media strategies, policies, and implementation.

Crisis Communications

  • Oversee the Enbridge Gas crisis communications program in support of the Enbridge Gas Emergency Response Program and execute communication strategies in conjunction with key internal clients to manage crises in a professional manner that protects the Enbridge Gas brand, reputation, and supports the business operation.

  • Coordinate and participate in PIO on-call rotation.

Websites:

  • Oversee the development of three new US Utility websites, integrating the legacy website content, ensuring that customers understand where to access information and transact in the correct location based on their legacy utility service provider.

Brand

  • Project manage the rebranding of three newly acquired US Utilities. Scope includes all marked assets, and related external, internal and customer communication strategies developed, website and digital assets rebranded.

Executive and Leadership Communications

  • Provide executive communications assistance including presentation development, speechwriting, media training, interview preparation, penning of opinion editorials, letters to the editor and media story pitching.

Who you are:

Required :

  • A University degree is required ideally in communications or a related discipline.

  • A minimum 8 years’ broad based business experience in a senior communications role, ideally with experience in the energy sector.

  • Experience in media relations – both traditional and digital.

  • Ability to maintain calm during emergency and crisis situations, and public speaking.

  • Experience in issues analysis, strategic communications planning, and crisis communication planning.

  • The ability to be both strategic and tactical, as flawless execution of strategic communications will be critical.

  • Superior communication skills. The demonstrated ability to communicate complicated messages to diverse audiences and to adapt key messages and writing styles for individual leaders.

  • Excellent writing skills for mass communications as well as specialized audiences.

  • A strong influencer both internally and externally.

Preferred:

  • Professional communication accreditation would be an asset (IABC-ABC or equivalent)
