ElectriCities of North Carolina Manager, Grid Innovation in North Carolina

Overview

The Strategy and Services Division is responsible for leading corporate strategic planning efforts for the company and providing value-added services to ElectriCities’ member electric utilities. The Division provides a range of services to ElectriCities members and is responsible for assessing members’ ability to provide competitive retail offerings and identifying strategic areas of need for Members in providing these offerings. While monitoring the effectiveness of our Members retail offerings through a variety of surveys and data collection, the division also develops programs to augment the efforts of the Members where there are gaps. The Division advocates for action amongst the Members through strategic messaging that is conveyed through conferences, training, regional meetings, and other outreach.

The Manager, Grid Innovation is responsible for the provision of technology solutions for ElectriCities members. This role will collaborate with departments in the Strategy and Services Division and across ElectriCities to ensure that the technology programs that are provided to our members address industry challenges. This role has supervisory responsibilities over the Grid Innovation Department.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the Chief Strategy Officer on industry trends related to electric utility technology, and renewable and clean energy programs.

  • Maintain overall responsibility for the development, maintenance, and execution of the Member Services Strategic Technology Roadmap (STR). Work with consultants for input on technology trends and develop ElectriCities’ position on retail customer trends and segmentation.

  • Develop, lead, and execute ElectriCities’ technology programs, to include product definition and customer requirements, proposal development, contract origination and management, and customer service and satisfaction.

  • Manage the program definition, roll out, and assessment of existing and new Member Services technology and renewable programs, which include Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI), Customer Information Systems (CIS), financial systems, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), retail revenue enhancement, retail renewable programs, distributed energy resource programs, and other technology solutions.

  • Maintain overall responsibility for renewable energy strategy:

    • Oversee compliance with all aspects of the North Carolina Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (REPS).
  • Manage origination of all renewable energy contracts.

  • Advise Power Agency Participants on issues related to customer-owned renewable generation, including net metering.

  • Assist in the development of renewable energy policy positions.

  • Research, establish, and implement distributed energy resources (DER) programs.

  • Lead efforts for developing multi-utility federal and state grant proposals for ElectriCities members in the areas of technology deployment.

  • Manage and promote ElectriCities’ North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) compliance program on behalf of Non-Power Agency Members of ElectriCities. Maintain the responsibility for the completion of all documentation and forms necessary to ensure that ElectriCities’ members are compliant with all required NERC standards.

  • Lead and/or provide assistance to various teams comprised of Members’ staff and internal staff. These teams include the Operations Standards Team, Utility Directors Advisory Committee, ElectriCities conference planning teams, and various vendor user groups.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with various industry partners, academic partners, and member organizations such as Utility Analytics Institute, E4 Carolinas, Universities, etc.

  • Provide input on technical training for Members based on needs and requests. Topics could include electricity 101, distribution equipment, smart grid, billing systems, and other topics as requested by Members.

  • Develop and maintain department business plan and budget projections and maintain responsibility for adhering to department budget.

  • Provide managerial leadership for the Grid Innovation Department, and manage all issues related to budget, business plan, and personnel management.

  • Foster an environment of teamwork in order to effectively coordinate with other ElectriCities departments and personnel.

  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

    Physical Requirements

    The Manager, Grid Innovation must maintain the physical condition necessary to perform tasks in an office setting such as operating a personal computer, keyboard, and other peripheral equipment. Frequent travel within the state of North Carolina and periodic travel within the U.S. for training and development purposes is required.

    Controls

    The employee is directly accountable to the Chief Strategy Officer who will have supervisory and administrative oversight. The employee’s success depends upon close coordination and cooperation with several key groups, including city managers and utility directors, and other departments within ElectriCities. This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the fair labor standards act.

Qualifications
  • An undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university. A degree in Engineering, Mathematics, the sciences, Computer Science, or equivalent and 5 years of related utility or business experience is required. An advanced degree along with a balance of technical, program management and business skills are preferred.

  • The ability to work with the staff of members, trade associations, and public power staff. The individual should also be self-motivated and able to complete work without supervision, and independently create programs to aid the Members.

  • The ability to communicate clearly in written and verbal form.

  • Strong strategic and tactical analytical capabilities, including the ability to develop and manipulate financial models, the ability to diagnose and implement solutions for members, and the ability to assess the impact of specific programs for members.

  • Willingness to travel to Member cities and other locations, as needed. Some overnight travel will be required. Flexibility and willingness to work outside of normal business hours is required.
