Your Opportunity with Michels Canada

Reporting to the VP of Infrastructure, the Tunneling Operations Manager will undertake the overall responsibility across all provinces (Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario) for the planning, development, construction of all Tunnel, Micro-Tunnel and associated works related to these projects.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the group during the planning and establishing of tunneling pursuits.

  • Oversee the tender document review process, with specific reference to tunneling aspects and contribution to the tunnel aspects of the estimate.

  • Review the design and identify potential risks and issues that will delay construction. Working towards solutions through discussions and seeking resolution of issues with the entire management and operations tunneling team.

  • Plan, review and oversee the construction of tunnel projects, including quality and safety and productivity.

  • Plan, review and oversee the design and configuration of temporary construction works such as launch and retrieval, portals and shafts and related works.

  • Plan, review and oversee the design and selection of TBMs, MTBMs, including test and commissioning.

  • Regularly audit and review work practices and identify any non-conformance and safety violations. Propose solutions as necessary.

  • Monitor work progresses and identify when there is a delay and discuss/agree and implement mitigation measures.

  • Establish and execute a complete and comprehensive framework to accelerate the transfer of knowledge and competency to employees through the life of projects, including the establishment of “critical information and templates” to influence future projects.

  • Plan, review and oversee the Technical “know-how” of the Tunneling and Micro-Tunneling teams.

  • Establish objectives for the organization and formulate or approve policies and programs.

  • Represent the organization or delegate representatives to act on behalf of the organization in negotiations or other official functions.

  • Coordinate with other divisions or departments.

  • Working with Regional Directors, Project Managers, Superintendents or other staff, ensuring the necessary processes are in place to assist them in creating optimum working conditions.

  • Provide updates and reports on the progress and development of Tunneling and Micro-Tunneling Projects

  • Mentoring the teams, ensuring the transfer of knowledge and skills to the Tunneling and Micro-Tunneling teams and recommend ways and methods to accelerate the development on a continuous basis.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Five to ten years’ of experience in a lead construction management position with the responsibility of overseeing scopes of work and field teams

  • Ten to fifteen years’ experience working in the Tunnel and Micro-Tunnel and or underground infrastructure industries

  • Ten to fifteen years’ hands-on experience in overseeing the operation of all aspects of Tunneling and Micro-Tunneling projects with an emphasis on pressurized EPB and Slurry TBMs, and shaft construction

  • Previous experience working with Tunnel and Micro-Tunnel boring machines

  • Strong awareness and understanding of construction safety principles

  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain relationships with the client, client engineering groups, peers, direct reports, field personnel and subcontractors

  • Ability to supervise staff in various areas of responsibilities

  • Excellent Computer skills including proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, P6, Autocad, HCSS etc.)

  • Excellent team, interpersonal and communications skills, both written and oral

  • Ability to supervise staff in various areas of responsibilities

  • Strong awareness and understanding of construction safety principles
