This is a "Project" position designed to support project work for a limited duration. While the exact duration of the project is yet to be determined, we currently anticipate a period of 3-5 years based on business needs at the present time following which you will separate from the Company. It is important for you to understand that this period may be shortened based on business needs in the future at which point you will separate from the Company. It is also important for you to understand that this employment is of a limited duration and that you will not be entitled to separation benefits under any PSEG plan at the time you separate from the Company. Director Level approval and waiver will be required for you to bid on other PSEG opportunities within the first 3 years of assignment. From year 4 through the end of your assignment, Director level approval and waiver will not be required. If your assignment ends prior to the anticipated timeframe based on business needs, you will be allowed to bid on other PSEG opportunities without Director level approval from the time you are notified your assignment will be ending through the end date of the assignment.
This is a position in Protection/Controls Design Engineering within the DP&C organization, utilizing knowledge of utility business experience, engineering principles and practices acquired through experience and education. Requires a technical background in system protection, relaying and controls to develop or review the protection/control portion of the design projects for existing and new switching stations and substations from 4kv up to 500kV. Good skills required to work in a team of associates and contractors to ensure successful completion of the assigned projects, checking and reviewing of design work of in-house junior Designers, CAD Drafters, and outside engineering firms.
Responsibilities include the following:
Work as part of a team of protection/controls designers. On weekly basis, complete the workload progress on all the projects to accomplish the targeted completion and in-service dates; review the deliverables; check field conditions; assist construction during construction and commissioning stage of the projects; and take care of as built portion of the P&C design. Work independently or with little supervision to create one line diagram from the scope of work, and after its approval, work on all aspects of P&C design that include relay protection and control schematics, instrumentation and alarm schematics, SCADA controls, racks and panels front views, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts and cable schedules, bill of material, etc. Work on control and protection for 4kv-500kV HV lines, HV breakers, transformers, busses, capacitor banks, reactors, phase angle regulators, GIS, switchgears, mobile transformers, unit substations, etc. Work on detailed fiber optic communication drawings. Work with vendor and manufacturer documents and review their controls/ protection drawings for the projects.
Coordinate your work with Electrical and Civil designers and engineers, Project engineers, equipment experts, Project control engineers, System protection, construction supervisors and field personnel. Provide guidance and perform reviews of P&C design of the A&E firms that work on PSE&G projects. Work on customer substation P&C design reviews. Take part in work on P&C standards and standard drawing development and their updates in accordance to the relay protection I/O guide and new station arrangements. Review key drawings and detailed schematics of controls and protection for not complex projects and check their adherence to PSE&G system protection and controls standards. Check the deliverables of junior designers, contractors, and CAD drafters in P&C design engineering. Work on CAD drafting utilizing Microstation V8i or Bentley Connect software. Actively participate in knowledge transfer and acquisition.
Additional duties include:
Be able to provide support on call and during off-hours in response to system emergencies and equipment failures or during any rush assignments.
Interface with other technical and project disciplines to support project schedules and milestones. Coordinate your work as required with system planners, designers, asset experts, project managers, vendors, and construction and operation personnel. Provide technical support during electrical construction and commissioning phases of projects. Be able to demonstrate strong team player skills.
• B.S in Electrical Engineering
• Minimum 2 years of electrical utility or equivalent experience and knowledge of controls/protection design engineering for electrical substations and switching stations equipment, e.g., transformers, LTC, circuit breakers, medium voltage switchgear, regulators, capacitor banks, GIS, disconnect switches, etc.
• Working knowledge of Microstation XM, V8i, Bently Connect or AUTOCAD software.
• Candidate must possess knowledge of protective relay and controls schemes and applications.
• Applicant must have effective problem-solving and decision-making skills, team player skills, strong planning and organizing skills, must be adaptable and be results-oriented.
• Clear and concise writing and verbal communications skills are essential.
• Be available during emergency replacement work and assist during system emergency situation.
• Because the job requires driving to company locations and off-site assignments and events, must possess a valid driver’s license with a safe and satisfactory driver history.
• Advanced degree or technical training, or P.E license.
• Experience with GIS and fiber optic communication.
