As part of the Performance group, the Technical Services team delivers support functions, project retrofits and advanced fixing to operating renewable energy power plants and their associated substations. The work involves both high voltage substations as well as medium voltage (<35kV) equipment in collection system and DC conversion. We are currently looking for a dynamic and passionate electrical engineer to serve as the high/medium voltage domain expert for the Technical Services team. The engineer for this position should enjoy the versatility of technical, regulatory compliance and project management tasks associated with solar, wind and bulk energy storage facilities and equipment. This is a solid opportunity for an engineer that not only is proficient in the technical engineering aspects but enjoys a variety of challenges and building and maintaining relationships with suppliers and consultants.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Responsible for engineering/solving activities and support for operating solar, wind, and BESS collection systems and high voltage substations (35kV to 500kV).

Review test documentation associated with the maintenance of HV substations and maintain NERC compliance documents

Participate in NERC compliance audits and prepare audit worksheets

Establish and maintain relationships with high voltage contractors for support maintaining/fixing facilities.

Provide support and review of documents related to the acquisition of new renewable projects

Provide design review and advice/reports on any systemic operational issues and provide feedback to the construction engineering teams.

Assist field teams on issues with inverters, padmount transformers experiencing operational or maintenance issues. Work with the equipment manufacturers or other outside resources to develop solutions.

Participate in the transition of project substations and collection systems from construction to operations substation commissioning by reviewing apparatus testing and construction documentation.

Work with a project team including real estate, permitting, interconnection, attorneys, finance, and construction in the field.

Travel and fieldwork 25%. The majority of projects are primarily located in Virginia, New York, California, Arizona and Hawaii.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. or equivalent experience Electrical Engineering with emphasis on Power Systems.

5+ years of substation/collection system experience with construction, operation or fixing substations/medium voltage collection systems.

Proficient in reading schematics for substations HV breakers, main power transformers, etc.

Familiarity with NERC standards related to Generator Owner/Generator Operator

Basic understanding of grid integration requirements for renewables.

Strong interpersonal skills and ability to lead technical discussions among field personnel, contractors, and internal customers.

Strong organizational/project management skills and ability to prioritize projects and tasks.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • Prior experience in wind, solar or BESS related to renewable projects

  • Experience in operation/fixing HV/MV issues related to substation or collection system

  • Ability to work on a variety of projects with many different teams simultaneously

  • Knowledge of power transformer testing/fixing in substations

  • Experience with inverters associated with solar and battery storage

  • Experience in substation component test methods and relay system testing.

  • Skill with developing/evaluating/solving coordinated relay and RAS protection schemes

  • Experience in SCADA controls and architecture.

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $90.000 and $110.500/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment.
