Job Description

Mission Statement

Core Responsibilities

  • The Manager is responsible for the coordination and the production of electric energy and/or steam energy to customers by providing safe, efficient and environmentally compliant operation of watch supervised and power plant equipment such as boilers, turbines, generators and auxiliaries.

  • Strives to improve morale and productivity of subordinates. Adheres to Company rules and terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Determines appropriate disciplinary action, conducts interviews, participates in settlement of grievances, and evaluates subordinates' work performance in a timely manner.

  • Issues Operating Orders and Work Permits as required to ensure optimal operating conditions, and conducts safety talks to reaffirm the critical importance of compliance with all applicable safe work practices and procedures, and governmental regulations.

  • Fosters a positive employee relation atmosphere through the proper and effective administration of the Company's personnel policies, procedures, and practices including, but not limited to training, motivation, counseling, performance appraisals, discipline, EEO and security.

  • Recommends modifications to existing procedures and practices to improve the performance and restoration of the steam system.

  • Develops employee skills by identifying appropriate training and leadership courses in addition to providing opportunities for growth.

  • Aid in schedule adherence during Capital Projects and Station Outages by being available in the field as a dedicated Operations Subject Matter Expert

  • Ensures assets are accurately tagged in the field and relevant drawings utilized to develop protection are accurate

  • Audits procedures and CAN hold offs periodically to ensure newly commissioned project updates are implemented

  • Works closely with Project Management to ensure all operational requirements are captured in the scope of work, ensure field installations are ergonomically optimal for field support personnel to operate

  • Ensures new assets and PMs are captured and clearly understood by operational personnel

  • Aid in schedule adherence during Capital Projects and Station Outages by being available in the field as a dedicated Operations Subject Matter Expert, post-project lessons-learned analysis with support groups

  • Perform project close-out tasks including the facilitation of operations training, recording assets in Maximo database, updating the control room simulator, and updating operating and station procedures

  • Develop alarm response and operating procedures to ensure adherence to compliance requirements. Recommend modifications to existing procedures and practices to improve the performance and restoration of the steam system.

Required Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree In Engineering or related technical field and 3 years' experience in a power plant, US Navy, or merchant shipping environment or

  • Associate's Degree In Engineering or related technical field and 5 years' experience in a power plant, US Navy, or merchant shipping environment or

  • High School Diploma/GED and 7 years' experience in a power plant, US Navy, or merchant shipping environment

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree In Engineering or related technical field

Relevant Work Experience

  • Working knowledge of a control room, boiler and high/low pressure auxiliary operations, plant trouble shooting, boiler mechanics, blueprint reading and pipe fitting. Required

  • Knowledge of safe work practices/procedures, operating orders, work permits and use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Required

  • Proficient in the following computer programs/applications - Microsoft office, work management systems such as Maximo. Required

  • Strong oral and written communication skills and ability to effectively interact with both internal and external customers, support staff, and various levels of management and union. Required

  • 3-5 years Supervisory experience. Required

Licenses & Certifications

  • Driver's License Required

  • Boiler License NYC Stationary Engineer's License 1 1/2 Yrs Preferred

  • Other: Dock Access 180 Days Required

Physical Demands

  • Ability to respond to system emergencies

  • Able to work in all weather conditions, i.e. excessive heat and/or cold

  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces

  • Work in, under, and on top of all types of company vehicles and/or equipment

  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations

  • Ability to climb ladders and stairs

  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment

  • Perform work in underground vaults through manholes

  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)

  • Ability to work with, and in, the vicinity of high voltage and/or other high-energy systems

  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations

  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations

  • Ability to climb in and out of manholes and excavations

  • Stand, walk, and climb ladders and stairs for the duration of the workday

  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday

  • Ability to travel to company locations to work on storm restoration and heat contingencies

  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses

  • Work rotating shifts, including nights, midnights, weekends, and holidays

Other Physical Demands

  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
