EMS/SCADA Analyst

Position Summary:

The primary functions of this position include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) modeling and field verification; Human-machine interface (HMI) display development and maintenance; and initiating contact with field personnel to resolve data quality issues involving RTU points. This position requires a high degree of adaptability, a focus on meeting customer needs, and continuous improvement in the systems supported.

Principal Accountabilities:

  1. Perform modeling and commissioning of RTU points in the SCADA database accurately and precisely with priorities of safety, compliance, and operating reliability.

  2. Create and maintain SCADA HMI displays on proprietary software to conform to established standards, utilizing information from one-line drawings and other models.

  3. Develop and maintain working relationships with various AEP employees and contractors, including the ability to schedule and cooperate in collaborative projects, and demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  4. Resolve data quality issues with field and office personnel utilizing knowledge of station equipment and electrical measurements. (Transformer, Circuit Breaker, Amps, Kilovolts, Megawatts)

  5. Learn and adapt to using a variety of unique software applications and hardware configurations.

  6. Adhere to all AEP corporate and departmental guidelines, policies, and procedures, as well as pass annual Security Awareness Training to maintain NERC-CIP security access.

  7. Reciprocate support and training on subject matter with other personnel.

  8. Work occasional overtime as required to complete projects. Progress toward rotation in 24 hour on-call duty will be required. Minimal overnight travel for meetings and training may be required. (Normally less than five nights a year.)

Minimum Requirements:

EMS/SCADA Analyst, Associate

Education: Associates Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications or related Technical field or higher from an accredited college/university or high school diploma and two years related military or electric utility technical experience.

Experience: No experience necessary with degree or as stated above.

EMS/SCADA Analyst

Education: Associates Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications or related Technical field or higher from an accredited college/university or high school diploma and two years related military or electric utility technical experience.

Experience: Three years EMS/SCADA experience with Associates Degree and Five years of experience with a high school diploma. Individuals with a Bachelor’s Degree and 1 year of EMS/SCADA experience may be considered for entry into the organization at this level.

In addition to the EMS/SCADA experience noted above.

Additional Information:

  1. Demonstrate detailed understanding of operational practices of applicable equipment and software in assigned areas of knowledge 

  2. Strong skills in communication, issue resolution, organization, and facilitation are essential. 

  3. Solid understanding of the business unit / operating company systems is preferred. 

  4. Experience with SCADA systems required. 

  5. Perform troubleshooting and problem resolution in assigned areas of knowledge.  

  6. Provide after-hours support for the EMS/SCADA systems as needed.  

  7. Learning current technology utilized by AEP and understanding how it applies to SCADA. 

  8. Able to understand basic Protection and Control application and the affect it has on overall SCADA. 

  9. Begins to gain an understanding of what each type of equipment is in the substation with guidance from higher-level team member.
