Lark Maintenance Machining/Repair Shop is a centralized facility that provides specialty repair services to the Duke Energy Generation Fleet. The primary focus of the shop is complete overhaul of balance-of-plant pumps, refurbishment/replacement of aged components, repair of turbine-generator related components and responding to fleet needs to support the generation assets. The shop is composed of skilled personnel that work both independently and as a team to provide a high level of customer service to Duke Energy. The Lark Machine Shop Technician is a progressive position requiring individuals to work in a machine shop environment. Individuals in this position must be agile in their skillsets and have the ability to be flexible since the work is directly dictated by the priorities of the fleet. Applicants for this position should have a strong background in manual machining capabilities, strong mechanical aptitude, experience related to equipment/component repair and equipment rebuilds (e.g. pumps, valves, gearboxes, turbine/generator/hydro components).

  • HS Diploma / GED

  • 3 years of related experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to follow instructions (e.g. procedures, standards), promote a safety conscious work environment and work independently in a shop environment

  • Ability to be agile and supportive for high work-load demands and emergent requests

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with a team to ensure efficient completion of projects

  • Technical school or applicable military training preferred.

  • Journeyman mechanic/millwright certification preferred, but not required.

  • Prior experience with the setup and operation of manual machining equipment, including: lathes, milling machines, horizontal/vertical boring machines, turning centers, surface/OD grinders, shop saws, waterjet operations

  • Prior experience with field machining operations, (boring bars, stud removal, flange facing, etc.) preferred, but not required

  • Hands-on experience in the disassembly, inspection, repairs and reassembly of various styles of pumps and related components

  • Prior experience with both static and dynamic balancing of pump related components, (shafts, impellers, etc.) preferred, but not required

  • Prior experience with repairing turbine/generator related components (e.g. diaphragms, packing boxes, oil seals/deflectors, hydrogen seals, valve subassemblies, etc.)

  • NCCCO/NCCCR certification for mobile and/or bridge crane preferred, but not required

  • Prior experience or certification for rigging and bridge crane operation preferred, but not required

Specific Requirements

  • Ability to setup and operate safely and independently; manual lathes, milling machines, boring machines, (both horizontal and vertical), grinders, drills and large metal cutting saws.

  • Qualified to use precision instruments to an accuracy of 0.001”. Performs inspection and manufacture of parts using precision measuring and testing equipment (M&TE) including: OD and ID micrometers, Vernier calipers, dial gauges, hardness testers, XRF analyzer.

  • Ability to perform machining operations to hold close tolerances, (+/-.003).

  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings, blueprints, work instructions, and procedures.

  • Ability and willingness to follow work instructions or procedures as required.

  • Ability to effectively use computer software (Inventor-CAD, Microsoft Office programs, SharePoint online etc.).

  • Maintain qualification and demonstrate proficiency to safely inspect/install/use rigging with use of overhead pendant cranes up to 60T capacity.

  • Maintain qualification and demonstrate ability to safely use rigging and lifting techniques to transport and invert large components.

  • Operation of various location vehicles and equipment. Including: forklifts, pickup trucks, man lifts, (scissor and boom lifts), steam cleaners, sandblasters, water jet, oxy/fuel cutting operations.

  • Ability to perform preventive maintenance on equipment along with maintaining shop housekeeping during operations.

  • Ability to satisfactorily complete radiation worker training/security clearances necessary to work in a nuclear power plant environment and maintain a Nuclear badge.

  • Remain agile to support the fleet outside of home base location as needed.

In addition to basic machining this position will be required to maintain at least one of the following detailed skillsets:

• Specialty Welding/fabrication (qualification on specialty materials in GTAW, GMAW, SMAW) including prep-work and use of oxy/fuel operations • CNC Machine Operator/Programmer (Ability to use CNC equipment (lathes, mills, waterjet) both by CAD/CAM program operation and manual user interface (G-code) for component manufacture and repair. Ability to safely setup and operate CNC equipment. • Advanced Machinist with demonstrated ability to perform more complex and advanced machining exercises. Qualified to use precision instruments to an accuracy of 0.0001”. Ability to perform machining operations to hold close tolerances, (+/-.0005). Performs inspection and manufacture of parts using precision measuring and testing equipment (M&TE) including: OD and ID micrometers, Vernier calipers, dial gauges, hardness testers, XRF analyzer. Ability to utilize digital metrology equipment (e.g. FARO, Hexagon, Leika) along with associated software (Inpsire). • Equipment Specialist (expert knowledge for disassembly/ inspection/ repair/ reassembly of RRE/Nuclear mechanical components up to and including valves, pumps (single and multi-stage, split case horizontal, large vertical), gear boxes, turbine-generator related components or any other balance of plant equipment which brings value to Lark Maintenance. Hands on experience: in the assembly/ disassembly and repair of various styles of pumps, both in shop environment, as well as field environments. Direct experience related to shop disassembly, inspection, repair, and reassembly of ring section boiler feed pumps, volute style boiler feed pumps, as well as other multistage horizontal pumps with high complexity, multistage vertical pumps, single stage vertical pumps and diffuser style pumps. Ability to utilize digital metrology equipment (e.g. FARO, Hexagon, Leika) along with associated software (Inpsire).
